Is it common for Type R version 3/4 engine blown up?
Hello
I've just sold my white RA, and I miss it quite a bit - so I've decided to get a Type-R now.
Seen quite a lot of Type R's with engine rebuilds.
Is it common that their engines blow up around 60k?
Please reply with some info asap.
Thanks in advance.

Biggest cause is bad fuel, the ecu cannot retard that far back so just lets it carry on doing so, soon bang.... engine gone, normally a piston if its minimal, big end if its a little more severe.
Knock link and octane booster is what is needed on these, most people dont run it on that though because they dont understand what the car is and just put unleaded fuel in...

Thanks for replying quickly.
Well the Type-R that I am going to be seeing soon said it was the big end.
Is it too much trouble to ask if you could explain or is there a specific post for this, or even in a Subaru FAQ?
If I wanted to put in Unleaded fuel and Octane booster, how would I measure the ratio - if that's correct?
I ran my RA with Super and 5W40, so whether this was correct or not. (?)
Is it 5W40 for Type-R's?
And the difference being in a normal STi and a Type-R STi?? (if there is any?? As I don't see saloons with engine rebuilds - or haven't come across any)
Thanks again!

Same engine on the Type R as the saloon.
I run 15w50 motul but you can get 5w40, that isnt really a problem, its the 30 ratings that are bad, a 10w40 semi synth is standard subaru oil.
Your best options for keeping an eye out on the fuel is a knocklink, it needs a bosch sensor but it gives you a visable knock warning when there is excessive noise in the engine (det).
As for octane booster, 1 bottle of millers octane plus per tank

Thanks again for the info!
Just some more questions...
I guess I see more Type-R's having rebuilds, than saloons because it's worth more in the Type-R?
As I'm slightly confused about buying a Type-R with an engine rebuild.
I suppose if it's done properly, it will last?
Appreciate your help Tony

So hmm! I don't see Saloons having rebuilds, or even RA's with rebuilds. Is there some sort of different thing going off with the Saloon versions and Type-R version??
I know Tony's written that it's the same engine and what not... But is it because the Saloons aren't worth rebuilding then?
Thanks again!

Yeah but they use the same engine huh?
This is where I need someone to explain to me why I see Type-R's with rebuilds and not "types of imprezas".
Or should I just leave it as that, and not think twice and just get a Type-R with a rebuild?

tbh i wouldn't worry about it. p1 have a nasty habbit of going bang near or before they reach 60k, after rebuild there as good as new.
if you can get one with a rebuilt engine by a reputable company you'll be in great shape. so many things vary from car to car and model to model.
how there driven, or not, are they warmed up before being driven hard etc etc it all makes a diff to how lng they last.
be all and end all, reputable rebuild and your sorted

I thought the sti, type r and type ra all had the same engine. The type r and ra have different transmission, closer ratios, different diffs and dccd. The standard sti has a 5 speed box, no dccd, higher ratios. Isn't a type r the same as type ra except for the number of doors ?
I used to have a version 4 sti, ran it on optimax and octane booster. Changed the oil every 3750 miles using good oils and a subaru filter. Had a knocklink fitted but it never lit up full red. 40k on the clock when I bought it, 80k on the clock when I sold it, same engine, same gearbox, no melted pistons, knackered big ends or anything of the sort.
I don't think the type r engine is any more likely to fail than a type ra or a standard sti. Fuel it right, lubricate it right and don't redline it and it should be fine. If you want to use uk fuel straight then get a power fc and have it mapped for that fuel.

Thanks for the spec & info.
I'm guessing if a rebuild has taken place, the car has been drive quite hard?
And then I'm thinking... hmm about the rest of the car....
I suppose an engine rebuild could mean various things, like what everyone has said above.
I'm also scared of buying one with an engine rebuild and has clocked the miles, but I suppose I'd only be scared if it hasn't got FSH.
Well I'm going to travel quite a while tomorrow and see what happens
Thanks again folks!
