Which fuel is best?
Hi all. Heard a few answers to the above question but thought I would put it you lot - which fuel would you consider to be the best in terms of safety against the evils of pre-ignition/detonation etc and which best suits the uk scoob ? Just to start things off I have been told (by a subaru specialist...) that shell optimax (now v-power offers the best in terms of knock protection) and that Tesco Superunleaded is rubbish. Any views ?

No doubt someone will disagree with me, but it's pretty simple...octane=resistance to detonation, by definition. Therefore the higher the octane, the less likely it is to detonate for a given level of tune. Tesco 99 has been proven over and over to be one of the very best fuels available in the UK, as was Shell Optimax in its time. For a 'subaru specialist' to claim that Tesco's is rubbish is a pretty bold claim, when there are a significant number of Subaru tuners and mappers who map on it rather than Optimax. Whether this will change now that V-Power is out, I don't know, but bottom line is you pay your money you takes your choice.
I personally was always happy with Optimax which I ran for a number of years, then switched to Tesco 99 which I got very good results with and which my Scoob was mapped to with a Power FC. I've tried a few tankfulls of V-Power and it seems to be just as good as the Tesco - just more expensive.

Can only agree with the above. Shell V power has kept the knocklink very quiet on my import that is mapped for jap fuel and the STi8 runs very smoothly.
If I had a Tesco closer to home I would use the 99 ron and save a few more pennies!

I mapped my car right to the edge on V-Power.. and then filled with Tesco99 and I don't need to alter the map.. they are pretty much like for like.. no magazine reading actually going out and doing it etc..
