Default 1st/best mod for a standard 54 WRX??

I promised myself I wouldn't go down the mod route when I got my WRX 2 months ago - but now that I've got it I'm curious as to what I could do to it for a few hundred quid.

Its a standard WRX on a 54 plate - I'd love to hear some opinions on what the best mod would be if I could find another £500 to spend on it - I'd be interested in mods to improve responsiveness - I love the acceleration above 3500/4000 rpm but have been a bit surprised at how sluggish it feels lower down the scale.

Personally I don't think you'd get a better 'bang for buck' than a remap, which will set you back around £600.

Guys - thanks for the early response.

The terms you've used are ones I've seen on this site many times but to be honest don't mean much to me - any chance you could expand just a touch - my mate owns a garage so i could probably get some work done at cheaper rates but i'm obviously going to need to tell him what it is i want doing!

What exactly is a remap and would i need a specialist firm to do it - for £600 i'd be interested - what benefits would I see?

Many thanks.

Exhaust and remap would be my vote but this would come in closer to £1k. Given the choice between the two - i would go exhaust. At least that way, a remap would be the next logical step as opposed to the other way round

You could just go for performance back box, straight through centre pipe and perhaps decat the centre cat pipe. You should be able get that lot for a £300-400, (cheaper second hand and there are some bargains to be had if you're patient). Plus the remap.

I went for Magnex Oval backbox and straight through centre pipe (de-resonated) and a remap, car made 261bhp and 256lb/ft torque. Being a WRX it's lighter than an STi so the performance gain was well worth the cash.

Have the remap done by a reputable company, which one will depend on where you live. The most common are Powerstation, ScoobyClinic, TSL, (plus many more ). Then there's the on-the-road mappers, (who also have the best reputations on here), Andy F and Bob Rawle. They'll charge a bit more but apparently they're the best at it, I had mine done at Powerstation so I can't vouch for what's better with their service but they do get plenty of praise on SN so they must be living up to their reps.

Many thanks for all the advice, it's much appreciated - I've got some stuff to think about now.

Cheers
