Default How long will the Gear box last? (1999 uk 365ft/lb)

Hi, I just need some info on standard gearboxes please

How long will the Gear box last on a 1999 uk classic with 345bhp/365ft/lb?

1-Whats the standard uk gearbox rated at?

2-How can you tell if the gearbox is on the way out?

3-How much is a standard replacement gearbox?

4-How much is a uprated gearbox?

5-Are there many people running big torque on standard box?

5a-How long have they been running with that amount of power?

Cheers

If it is a standard box probably not long, although you could be lucky if you drive it gently.

Depends on your driving style but not long.

About 300lbs of torque but they do go before then

It will be pretty quick, normally the syncro's go but it can also just strip a gear clean with no warning

probably 6-700 for a second hand one, but then your going to have the same problem.

2k for a 6 speed and rear diff (excl fitting i think)
Prob about the same for a 5 speed rebuild with decent hardened gear set

A few, most replaced their boxes though.

to be honest I would imagine there are plenty of people running more than you with standard boxes from what I have read on here with peoples claimed power outputs, it depends on how you treat it ie fast shifting things like that etc.

4- I paid £1600 (+ Subaru paid another £700) to rebuild my 5-speed with strengthened internals.

Cheers guys.

Im asking all these questions because theres a car that Im thinking of buying but Im being put off slightly by the fact that its torque is quite hi and it will probably need a new gear box soon and thats another 2k on top of what the cars worth.

Does anyone know of any decentent places I could call to get a price on a strenthened box?

Zen or API.

I'd be sceptical about claimed power outputs without a RR plot from a decent garage for guidance.

1. There is no absolute figure. Above 300ft/lbs of torque and you are pushing it

2. It may whine a little before going bang.

3. About £500

4. About £1500 for a 6 speed or £3k for an uprated 5 speed.

5. More break than last

6. Mine lasted a couple of months at 340/340

What is your cars spec? What RR did you use?
