Default Help! Is it a wheel bearing?

About a month ago I had the front nearside wheel bearing replaced. It was obvious it was gone as there was a lot of play in it and it was creaking when slow moving.

Right. Now I have a knocking noise coming from the offside front when I turn left. However it doesn't always do it and I have checked for play in it and it feels solid

The knocking noise only happens sometimes when a really push it hard cornering left.

The thing is I have already ordered a new bearing and hub from subaru but now I'm worried it could be the front diff or something.

The car is an MY03 STI UK with about 37k on the clock.

Any help and advice people can give would be greatly appreciated

I'd agree with wheel bearing giving you playing in the wheel when rocked from side to side and up and down on the tyre. Knocking..well, I'd say its bushes maybe - your best bet is get local dealer to look at it before buying the parts as I guess a hub etc isn't cheap (knowing scooby parts). Could also be suspension strut etc...can you see anything with the wheel off?

It isn't a knock that I would say comes from the suspension. It knocks in time with the wheel spinning.

Its like a knock knock knock knock knock that speeds up or slows down with the speed of the car

Has it had a bang that side? Just wonder why the sti wheel bearing worn in 37K...that's not alot in the life of a wheel bearing...?

How loud is it?

I'd recommend garage looks at it - one that can get all four wheels off the ground and have a look from underneath

Cheers swisstonihasher. On the way home I did a scientific test to see if it was the wheel bearing.
Basically I gave it as much sh*t round left hand corners as I could Its def a wheel bearing as it has now started to grind and hum which is more like how a knackered bearing should sound

Yea I was pretty pissed to have two front bearings go in a month. Its never touched a kerb in its life.
The only thing is that I run 2degrees neg camber at the front with yoko semi slicks so this probably puts more stress on the bearings than normal

Could it not be a CV joint?
If it's knocking when going round corners it could well be...

I thought a cv joint usually made a clicking noise for a while first. Well that whole hub assembley is being striped down tomorrow now so will just have to wait and see. Hopefully it is just a wheel bearing rather than the cv joint but I'll know more tomorrow.
These cars really are a bottomless pit when it comes to burning money

Thumbs up

Glad you're getting it done as a grinding wheel bearing and a fast car dont mix...
