Default CAM BELT CHANGE

i have just bought an impreza estate on a 93 with 79000 kilometers on it and was gunna change the cam belt for peace at mind,but want to know if i can just change the belt and not the tensioners or is it wise to change both?

I would personally changed the tensioner to be on the safe side. They aren't cheap, but it's a lot cheaper than mending a broken engine.

IIRC your phase 1 tensioner is circa £110.

sorry to ask so many ??????????? but is there only one tensioner and a belt i have to change?

That's correct yes.

Although you may find you need to replace a couple of the pulleys elsewhere round the belt, but i can't help you with that, as i've not yet came across that yet. The bearings inside them get noisey or something.

cool,there doesnt seem to be any noise or rattles just want to get the belt changed as im not sure when it was done last as its a fresh import of 4 weeks,also im not sure if i have a tensioner with a hydraulic adjuster or just a normal tensioner, any ideas?

Yours is a hydraulic piston arrangement. It's the more robust of the 2 available tensioners.

ok cool do they have to be replaced regular or at every can belt change? sorry for all the ??????? but this is my first scooby and after reading all the threads on cam belts im ****ing my self about the belt snapping and want to know what i need to replace when i do the change,suppose i wont know until the belts off anyway

You can wait till you stripped it all down and see how it looks. If it's not leaking and still has a lot of pressure when(slowly) pushing the piston in with a vice, then it should be re-useable, but i would change it for reassurance.

It's worth doing it right, first time.

sounds like a plan so i should change the belt,belt tensioner and the tensioner adjuster?

Tensioner adjuster and belt tensioner is one and the same thing.

But yet, change the belt and the tensioner. Somewhere like Roger Clarck Motorsport will supply the stuff quick style.
