Question Electronic boost controllers - are they worth it?

Any comments on electronic boost controllers? Which is best and do they perform better than say, stock ecu, for boost controller. If wanting towards 500 bhp, would a controller, say like turbosmart, be the key?

i think the apexi AVCR is seens as one of the better ones. Might be a good idea at this power level.

Question

Do you think it is 100% required though for this power figure? I've heard the electronic items keep wastegate readings to "zero" until specified boost reached which would improve spool.

I know you can have handy setups like low and high boost, etc...

You want an EBC to run max duty to promote spoolup not "zero".

Andrew...

Thumbs up

Think I've already talked myself into one...improve an already excellent spool up sounds good to me.

That Apexi sounds good.

Are you trying to find a cheap way to increase your power figures? Be careful, and check with your mapper before increasing boost anywhere in the rev range except for lowering spool point

FWIW, stock ECU boost control on new-age STi's (up to my03, anyhow) is more than capable. There is even in gear compensation available thanks to EcuTek. Takes a while to map, of course

woudlnt you rather get it running right first before trying to get more power?

Talking

Not cheap...but want to do the minimum spend to get the power I want and a finished job. I dont want to buy stuff I dont need and I want to only do the remap once more, final time, job done and not hear, "ah, well, you'll need to spend this next" again!

Surprised there re the oe ecu being good for it...would an electronic boost controller give nothing over and above a decent map then in this case?

I do, misfire first, then running sweet and extra torque.

Some model year new age STi's had the in gear compensation - don't think the WRX's do.....but I'm not up to date with available roms anymore, may be available now. Sounds to me you need an experienced second opinion; I see you've emailed Bob....way to go

WRXs shoudl have the same in gear compensation as its essentially the exact same UCU, just without AVCS.

Basically, variable valve timing (advanced valve control system would be my best guess ) - also reprogrammable with EcuTek.

Just confirm on my 02 WRX the oe ecu wouldn't do in gear boost control (ie, individual gear boost) like a EBC with ecutec so will be looking at EBC sometime in the future when/if I get bored of current power figures (although not sure this will happen!! lol).

Turbosmart Eboost2 is now our prefered option if you don't mind the dollar, it's the only controller we've tried that has the features of the AVC-R, and more besides, and actually controls the boost better too!
