I wonder if anyone can clear things up for me. I’m right in saying? :-
A scoobyecu, esl and z4 are all types of chips that fit on to a ecu board. And these sort of ecu’s can be mapped however
But a 6W & 7D ecu is a whole board. A 7D ecu has a socket already fitted but isn’t suitable for a import
So since I have a my95 wrx wagon I need to solder a socket on to it and then fit a scoobyecu
While I’m on the subject does anyone know what would be the best ecu for me and where I can get a socket soldered on to my ecu?

The Z4 was a jap ECU but is very close to the map used in the pro drive ecu of that time if you do a search on the Z4 there will be loads of info on it also some people say it will run without octane boost i have no personal experience of that though mate.
As stated a Z4 is a whole ECU unit.
Your main issue is that you have a wagon, like me.
Early import Wagons had TD04 turbo's fitted while early saloons had TD05 turbo's (early = pre '96). The TD05 is bigger than the TD04 and as such takes longer to spool up but can run more boost. A Z4 is mapped for a TD05 so unless you are changing you turbo this won't do your engine any good.
The ECU you have in your car at present will have a map for the TD04 running at about 220PS (210ish BHP). ESL chips and scoobyecu's are available with maps for your wagon with its TD04 that raise turbo boost to 1.0 bar. these chips overide the map on the ecu and run the engine from the map they have programmed into them. With a decat and panel filter you can probably expect around 260-270BHP with one of these, which is a great upgrade.
The adapter will come with the chip which you must solder into the ECU, not a massively hard task but if your in doubt a local electrician should be able to do it for you in about 15 minutes. You could also just get an ECU with a socket already in it, and fit the wagon mapped chip to it before you put it in your car. This will then be running the wagon map and should not be a problem.
I took a different approach as my turbo was knackered, so I replaced my turbo with a TD05 and poped in a Z5 ECU(same map as a Z4) and added an ESL chip later on. Car now has some serious grunt, but in hindsight I prefered the TD04 turbo as it spooled up much earlier than the TD05(started pushing from 2500 RPM, TD05 needs 3000RPM) which made it much easier to drive.
Hope this helps, any more questions then feel free to ask.

I've decided to stay with the TD04 I think you and a few other people have mentioned the benefits of staying with the smaller turbo.
When i can afford it i'll probably get a ESL ecu, when i contacted them to see how much they'll do an exchange for, they wanted an extra £100 which I thought was a bit steep. Will have to find a good local electrician instead.

Just keep an eye out for an ECU with a socket already in it, my Z5 had a socket and I'm told the following model numbers also have sockets pre built so you literally just have to drop the chip in (no soldering):
V7, 6D, 7D or 7K
No matter what map they run, once the chip is in the the J1 resistor is cut they will be running the map on the scoobyecu/esl chip.
