Default Disconnecting maf

I read somewhere that if you disconnect your maf sensor ('93 wrx) and the engine carries on running then the maf if is buggered! is this true?
mine ticks over ok (bit lumpy).
The revs on mine do sometimes stick at 1500 for a while at junctions etc (when warm) - is this another sign?

cheers guys
