Default Scooby ecu

I have a 94 WRX RA. My mate has given me his scooby ecu which i was going to fit to my car . His car is also a WRX RA 95 model. His cars rolling road read out has it at 316 bhp peaking at 1.3 bar of boost. His map sensor is disconnected but he has a 3 bar boost solenoid . The only thing that worries me is that i think the standard map sensor on a 94 WRX RA is rated to 1.1 bar. So what happens if the scooby ecu makes my car boost to 1.3 bar or is this not possible because of the 1.1 bar map sensor. Will trying this ecu cause any damage.

I'll appreciate any advice, Thanks guys .

Why was his MAP sensor disconnected?

You will have a 3 bar boost solinoid, all earlier Imprezas came with them!

the phase 1 map sensor reads to 1.23bar and you need a bit of head room for it to see it going over target and pull the boost down or boost cut if needed.. if it is a true Scoobyecu then it shouldn't damage the car and should be running less than 1.3bar..

I assume he had a bleed valve or electronic boost controller on the car to run that extra boost.

you will hit the fuel cut due to the limit of the map sensor,so in theory this should prevent any damage.
so has his map sensor been disconected to stop the fuel cut?!!

If map sensor is disconected it will flag a CEL as the ECU checks for about 1.4 - 1.7V from the map sensor at idle IIRC.

3-port solenoid is standard

This is what concens me that the map sensor has been disconnected so that it dosen't cut the fuel, which is gonna cause problems. can these scooby ecus be remapped? If so can't i just have this mapped to my car? Where can i take it to have this done and does anyone have any idea of cost? The problem i have is that i don't really want to spend £200 on a new ecu chip when i can get this for nothing. As my mate says if i don't use it it will only sit in his garage. Don't get me wrong i'm not trying to cut corners as this as we all know can cost us twice as much in the long run ,but i don't want to spend £200 quid then find out his ecu would have been fine.

Thanks
James

If my programmer was available I'd offer to blow a new map into it for you. But some bugger blew it up 2 weeks ago doing an electrical safety test.

I reckon he had an FCD of sorts to fool the ECU to run more boost. This would intercept the map sensor signal, which mught be what is meant by the term 'disconnected'.

As mentioned above the map sensor cannot be disconnected without the ECU throwing up a fault.

The only other possibilty is that he has a 3 bar map sensor fitted and the original map sensor is disconnected. This would allow more boost to be run due to the different scaling of the sensor.

If it was mapped and running 1.3bar, by whatever means. It should be fine running 1.1bar because the timing would of been pulled (i would hope) to enable it to run at 1.3bar without detting.

Fit it and see how it boost's. If it overboosts you can always fit a £20 Mechanical boost controller and set it to run 1.1bar.

If it's been mapped to 1.3bar on a MY97> 3bar map sensor the sensor will be outputing about 4.2V at 1.3bar.
This equates to around 0.85bar on a 2bar map sensor (MY92 - 96).
So if it only boosts to 0.8 - 0.9 bar on yours, then there's your answer and wack a mechanical boost controller on it.

Taken your advice and thinking about purchasing a mechanical boost controller before i fit the ecu. I can get a powertec or an R Spec manual boost controller for about £25 . They apparently fit between the turbo unit and the wastegate actuator . does this seem ok to you. Hopefully then when i fit my mates ecu to my car if its overboosting then i can just turn the controller down to 1.1 bar.

I appreciate your advice .

Thanks
James
