exhaust gas temperature failiure
Can anyone please help with my 2001 bug eye version 7 WRX.The engine light has come on,and after plugging in to check the fault at subaru,it says exhaust gas temperature sensor has failed.I got a new sensor and fitted it ,but it has happened again after just a few days.I am a told it may be a cat failiure in the front up pipe that comes from manifold to turbo, but i dont want to buy a new up pipe and find its not that.It seems the EGT sensor is failing due to heat, but i am not sure .Has anyone had this problem before? Is it a known fault? can anyone provide the solution?.Any help is appreciated as the problem is driving me mad!!

is the car standard appart from this? You've not had it remapped to high boost or anything?
if it's an up-pipe cat issue i'd be more concerned about it breaking up and bit's flying into the turbo. This shouldn't happen on a standard car.
For what it's worth - I don't believe this is a common fault.

Yes its totally standard, ive been told the sensor failiure is due to it getting hot and when the old one was removed it was falling to bits , so what im wondering is if the up pipe has a cat in it, is the cat broken? Otherwise i cannot see where the heat is coming from.

It is a common problem - mine does it, although it has been remapped, if you do a search you'll probably find a number of posts.
The EGT sensor does tend to cause my CEL to come one from time to time, often under hard driving. I'm not too concerned about it, you can get a cheap mod fitted that stops the sensor doing it (IIRC it involves put a resistor across sensor cable).
They don't even bother to fit this sensor to the STi's, only WRX's.

I'm driving around at the moment with the CEL light on due to the EGT sensor failure ...........again !!
If you are thinking about having the car re-mapped for a bit more performance then the mapper can raise the temp at which the CEL triggers (but can't wipe it out)

just wip out the sensor and add a 2.2k resistor I blew 2 beofore going this way
if your on the std uppipe it may be a bit more serious and worth a look - you pays your money
much cheaper to buy a 2p resistor, if your worried about the bodge STI'S do not have EGT's in the uppipe

Have you pulled out the new sensor to see if it is also damaged?
If so then the cat is breaking up/blocking and raising temps.
If you want to keep the car as std then replace the uppipe with a new catted version rather than a CEL fix. After all, the sensor is there to show up such a problem with the cat anyway.
BTW - the STi deffo does NOT have an EGT sensor in the up-pipe, nor does it have a cat.
