Bigend failure rebuild costs.
Hi Guys, just posting up on here to get a second opinion on repair bills for above:
Parts:
Gaskett set
STI Head gasket
New oil pump
No 4 con rod
New bearings
New Crankshaff
+ extras
I've been quoted circa 2.3k including labour & VAT is this about the norm?

if it is for a standard spec then to me it seems a bit steep to be honest, if its for uprated pistons rods etc then I suppose its not to bad (assuming its a full set used and not just one.
You can get a 2.5 shortblock for less than £1500 and then swap your heads over etc so for probably around the same price you can have more or less a new engine that will have loads more torque

To rebuild your existing engine - and get a good job - thats about right. You need an oil modine adding on the list as well
could add up to more depending on the extras that obviously the builder cannot tell at the moment.

Even if its £1000 in parts which it should be nowhere near!
Lets say that leaves £1000 (exc vat) for labour, thats 28.5 hours.. Assuming a 7 hour working day and they worked solidly on your engine that would be 4 days labour.. so to be fair lets say your paying for 2 people to work SOLIDLY on your engine for 2 days..
So your telling me its acceptable that it takes 2 professionals 14 hours to remove, refit and re-build an engine?

How much should the parts be then?
New crank? £400 ish
Imprezza gasket set £300 ish
STI Head gasket £150
Oil pump?
Bearings?
It all adds up pretty fast

daveys views on this are documented on another recent thread. If you do a search you will see he does not quite get the full picture.
Wether he thinks its OTT or not does not matter anyway.
The fact is, if you want a good, thorough and proper job doing, with everything inspected and cleaned then that is in the ball park. Substantially less and be very worried.
Oil modine is the housing that the filter screws into. cooling water is circulated around it for a tad more oil cooling.
The capliliaries and chambers in it are impossible to clean out to a level that you would be 100% certain there is no shell reminants remaining so it really needs binning.

The Zen price is very good, but it's £1627.73 PLUS VAT, so the total is £1912.58, and that build didn't require a crank.
So, with a crank, about £2300.00 all in then !
£1500.00 all in, for that job, is too cheap, unless someone's either giving parts, or labour for nothing.
Mark.
