Because Magnatec, like ANY other semi sythetic 10w-40 grade oil is the recommended oil to be used in your particular Subaru UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS

Driving hard or towing or trackdays is not normal operating conditions. Even the manual states that a thicker grade such as 10w50 or 15w-50 should be used in such conditions (at the expense of poorer cold temp and warm up properties ).

What the dealer (and the owner's manual) reccomends is fine for normal road use. Reason being, like all oils, under hot temps it thins out. And if used on a regular basis under hard conditions it thins out even more. Also being a semi sythetic, it will require more regular oil change intervals due to the oil breaking down from regularly sustained high temperatures.

Using full synthetics helps to negate the need for more frequent oil changes in these conditions as they are more resistent to breaking down under regular sustained high temperature use. And using a thicker grade will help maintain correct viscosity at high operating temperature encountered under hard use.

Any high performance 10w-50 or 15w-50 will be ok, as most are branded as fully synthetic anyway. A further step up is to use ester-based synthetic which are even more resistent to breaking down (silkolene Pro-s and Motul 300v). Just note that this is only needed for hard use, and is not a gospel law for cars that aren't used hard.
