Is my MAF failing ?
On Sunday I was sitting in traffic not long after setting out , the car was idling at about 1000 rpm obviously not up to temp . It then dropped to about 750 rpm , hunting up and down for a couple of seconds before returning to 1000 rpm . It did this about four times over a few minutes before settling into a normal idle .
It's never done this before and hasn't since but I've got vague memories of this tempory erratic idle being a warning sign .
Cars a 2001 bugeye wrx with a green cotton filter and a sports cat exhaust .
What do you think ?
Martin .

It could be a number of things. It does seem like the syptoms of maf failure though. The easiest way to tell is start the car and disconnect the maf sensor... the car should stall. If it doesn't it means that the car has adjusted because the maf sensor isn't working properly. This is the method that i was advised on when i had maf problems!!

Its the quite small black sensor on the air intake pipe. Has wiring clip going to it. Should be the first sensor that there is after the air box. (im sure you know but it measures the amount of air going into the engine and adjusts the air/fuel mixture accordingly)

So... I've just checked out my maf sensor .
Engine idling , unplug maf , engine stutters then continues to run .
So the maf sensors fcuked , yes ?
Anyone know the best place to get a new one ?

The £240 plus VAT is for all the plastic work surrounding the MAF as well. You can now buy the bugeye MAF as a standalone item at about £60 quid plus VAT.
When I had my car mapped by Bob Rawle (BR Developments) he had stacks of spare MAF's lined up on a shelf

Genics ,
Engine warning light come on with the maf disconnected ? Petrol smell from the exhaust ? Continues to run with maf unplugged ?
Doesn't look good .
Martin.
PS
Tried API - don't stock them .
Brought complete unit before seeing that I can buy just the sensor

Just picked it up this morning , so will fit this evening .
To be honest the car wasn't running badly , I just happened to notice the eratic idle while the ecu was learning to adapt to the failed senor ( syptoms mentioned to me ages ago by Gavin at TSL ) . So I didn't really drive it much with the failed senor .
