Side Window Scratching
#1
The 4 side windows in my MY98 all have deep scratches running up and down the length of the glass at one particular point. This seems to have been caused by the glass rubbing on something inside the door panel as it moves up and down.
I've seen a few other scoobs with the same problem so I was wondering is this fairly common? Is it due to the fact that the door has no frame for the glass to run up and down?

I've got this on my 95WRX and I know there have been posts about it before. I presume that as it hasn't got a frame to guide it as it goes up it must move and scrap on something inside the door!

I have a couple of small scratches on my side windows but I thought they were down to grit getting stuck between the outer seal and the glass.
How is your windscreen?, on a sunny day I can see scratches on mine where the wipers have been. This didn't happen on my last car which had the same Bosch wiper blades so I reckon the Scoob has glass that scratches easily.

Yip, my windscreen is scratched too but I put this down to the previous owner who I thought couldnt be bothered changing his wipers.
However, I am getting it replaced through my insurance which isnt too bad.

i had all 4 replaced by subaru
its caused by some small pads in the doors that make the window go up and down correctly theyget full of dirt etc and cause the scratching.
they changed them no problem
my car is a s98 terzo
under warranty

Just purchased a UK 98 Turbo and have the same scratches.
Checked 10 other cars at the same dealer from P to V reg and they all have them (to varying degrees). Before I get onto the dealer, I have a 2 year (purchased) warrentee from Subaru, have any of you out there had the windows replaced under this warrentee or have you used the original manufacturer one ?
PS: I have also noticed that if you open and close the windows, the seal between the window by the mirror on both front windows leaks air at 70+ mph. You cannot hear it if you have the stereo on, but is this standard or just on mine ?
Cheers,
Colin (Milton Keynes Area).

Colin,
1st off welcome to the board
The air leaks come as std on the Scoob It`s because there is no window frame as such. IMHO The only way to avoid this is to open the door befor rolling the windows up Remember to stop the car 1st though yeah
Have phun

Cheers for that info and the welcome. Just as long as I am not the only one with the problem. Still would like to know if anyone has had the scratched windows and the internal pads replaced under one of the Subaru Extended warrentees..? The window is also very slow...Regards, Colin

Colin, exactly the same model, the same scratches, same slow windows and the same purchased 2 year warranty. I will be trying out the after market service under this warranty when the car goes in for the 35,000 mile service and to check for piston slap.

OK...at least its normal and not just my car...
I am going to give the Scoob Wtee people an "anonymous" call later today if I can too.
Please let me know if you are able to get it done and what the Wtee company or dealer call the problem (or how they describe it so that is is fixable under wtee). From past experience, the wording or supposed "cause" for certain problems can make the difference between a fixable problem under wtee or not. Having a good dealer who is able to word it correctly to actually help you out is what its all about.
Cheers,
Colin..

Teknopete,
How easy is it to get the door cards off? My windows are a bit slow/getting scratched as well so a clean/replacement of the pads is in order
Regards.

The scratches are caused as a result of the window glass needing adjustment on the mechanism within the door. A further symptom is the glass not seating on the rubber seal on B post when window is up resulting in draughts/wind noise. I had this problem on drivers door and my local dealer sorted it, cost £60 labour charge though.

Removal of the door panels is easy, undo the couple of various screws under the clipped in covers and then pop off the panel from the bottom edge. There are about 10 push in studs that hold it in place. Then lift it upwards and it will come away. The only thing to do then is to remove the snap connectors that hold all the wiring in place. You can however get to everything without touching the wiring..
You can see the window pads and glass housing with it off but still connected via the wires.

We too have had front (side) glass replaced under warranty due to scratches. After only a week or so they were back !!
I had even had the conversation with the dealer re the cause, he said "it is all sorted now".
All sorted my ar*e !
