Default Turbo question

Looking to upgrade the turbo at some point but really after midrange performance, the options i have decided on are the td05 18g and 20g.
What are the pros and cons of each turbo? For everyday driving which turbo would provide better real world performance?

I've just had the 18G fitted on my sti 7,I was told the 18G would be better than the 20G overall because it has a better midrange and no surge problems.

You can find very much usefull information on this dilemma here:

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=482117

In generel 18G - no surge if you stay below 1,3bar (or 1,4 according to AndyF) at low rpm - god everyday use with good midrange torque - 20G almost the same - little less midrange torque - better dyno bhp at high rpm

Not quite sure what this question is about... Both 18G and 20G will produce significant more if you let it loose. The 1,3 or 1,4 bar was related only to surge at low rpm

I thought the 18G did not suffer any surge problems, this problems only affected the 20G.

You are right unless you try to increase boost beyond 1,4 bar at to low rpm

Wink Hi Banny

Your bit's should be with you today mate,
My club mate just got his 97 Terzo classic re-mapped on monday with a TD05 16g front entry and got 331.6 bhp with the usual supporting mods running 1.4 bar boost. I had a quick go and it was very drivable with boost coming in very comparable with the TD04, I was expecting more lag, but above 3,500 revs it's like 100 bhp NOS injection, so agresive and ALL THE WAY up to 7,500 rpm it's mind blowing.
I have not driven a car fitted with an 18 or 20g TD05 to compare but am sure that a 16g is hard to beat as an all rounder.
Cheers, Hans.

18g is better suited to non sti engines and 20g is better suited to sti engines due to the increased rev limit.

So for my car an sti v3, i would be better off with a 20G due to increased rev limit.

Would porting the turbo before fitting it on the car, get rid of the surge issues on the 20G?

I think it limits the BOOST CREEP issue but mines running at 363 HP with no major issues! Speak to Andy F with any technical issues you have on this particular unit.
