The 2003 WRX 5 door I test drove yesterday did exactly the same on the driver's belt. We couldn't work out which bit was squealing, but I think the car had recently been valeted and was wondering if they had cleaned the belts and may be water or cleaner had got into the mechanism - if I buy the car I'll want the dealer to sort it.
Sorry it's not a solution, but have you cleaned yours recently?

Funny that. I have an 03 Bugeye with exactly the same problem. And I haven't cleaned the belts in mine...
If you find out what it is let me know. I'm a bit busy installing a new ICE system at the moment. I'll put that next on my 'to do' list I promise

Ok,
I've fixed this on mine.
What it basically is, is a lip of plastic rubbing the belt as it comes out of the reel.
You need to take off the bit of plastic moulding covering the lower B pillar and seatbelt reel. It's relatively easy and straightforward to do. Just take your time and unclip it.
Then look at the inside of it and you will see plastic ribs, I think maybe three in total. The top one needs to be removed and made flush. Mine had a load of dust'n'fluff on it too! I did mine with a stanley knife being very careful.
Then replace the piece of trim and hey presto, no more squeaky seatbelt.
Cheers,
Nige.

AWESOME thanks guys !! I know I'm a little behind the times on this one, but I've been searching for this exact thread for ages .... my 2002 has been squealing for about two years now and has been driving me bonkers, but I never plucked up the courage to prise off the plastic covers on the b-pillar. I've seriously considering pouring oil down the inside of it though
Now I know what I'm doing first thing tomorrow morning !!
