Default Orange Engine light!!! hmmmm

Morning all,

slight concern, driving to work this morning my orange engine light came on the dashboard, this was after what I can only describe as a split second loss of power (felt like fuel starvation??) does anyone know what this could be?

I have a 2001 WRX which has been chipped to 265bhp....
Coincidently I have just had an MOT done (don't know whether they have done something by accident) and also put in some STP fuel injector cleaner in my tank. I always run the motor on 97 ron at least.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I live in Leeds, if I need to take it anywhere, where would people recommend.
I might take it to Well Lane Turbo in Batley, I hear they know there stuff, and the car was originally tuned by then under the last owner.

cheers Larsdowg/Rick

Default Can I check error codes?

Another idea: I had an FTO and you could plug a wire into a plug under the dashboard and back into another plug then find out an error code from the dashboard by counting a light flashing. Is it possible to do diagnostics on the Scooby like this?

Cheers Rick

Yes in answer to your question. Try this http://www.saxonfields.freeserve.co....htm#_ECU_Reset

Default no error codes????

I looked under the steering column an didnt find any lose black cables but found 2 green that looked just like the ones pictured http://www.saxonfields.freeserve.co....connectors.jpg

so plugged them in and follwed the instructions from http://www.saxonfields.freeserve.co....htm#_ECU_Reset

everything behaved as it said it would in the intructions, but no error codes logged, however engine light is still on once unplugged so what could this be now?

Should I be worried? havent been driving it above 3000 revs.......

thanks Rick/Larsdowg

You need to find and connect the two black connectors, iirc the wires aren't black, just the connectors. The greens won't show error codes.

The MY02 bugeye is different to the classics and uses the OBD port under the steering column to read error codes. Subaru dealers use the "select monitor" to read the codes and also to re-set the ECU to get rid of the orange light.
It might be something like a camshaft position sensor error which will go out after about 5 starts...other error codes need removing. The codes are stored in EPROM so didconnecting the battery doesn't work.

I have a SECS monitor fitted to the OBD port which reads the codes for me

My local Dealer will often hook up their monitor and check codes for free if they have time........I'd give the local Dealer a ring to see if they are as friendly. I'm not sure if Well lane has any Scooby diagnostic kit.

Hope this helps

excellent that explains why I can't find the black connectors ha ha......

thanks for the help I will give the dealers a ring and check with well lane to see if they can connect up the magic kit.

cheers Lars

p.s. where can you get a SECS monitor from and how much are they?
has it been a worth while purchase for you?

just a thought..................
on a 2001 newage can you not just remove a certain fuse, like on an FTO or an MR2 turbo for a certain period of time to reset the ECU?

i had a very sımılar problem wıth my 2001 1.6turbo (ı know u don't get them ın u.k. but we have them here ın greece) the power would shortly cut and suddenly come back again. we found out that the fuel pump was faılıng. ıt was due to the battery not havıng enough power (not enough ampers to operate the fuel pump) fortunatly, the car was stıll under warranty. they replaced the fuel pump, e.c.u., and the spark plugs, and i paıd for the battery. never had any probs sınce (touch the wood).
now i constantly monitor my volt meter on my turbo tımer. ı always turn the ignition on and wait for a couple of seconds for the fuel pump to complete ıts buzz and then start the engıne, and i never touch the gas pedal while i am at it
ı hope thıs wıll help

thanks for the info, the scooby has had issues starting the last few days thought it was down to cold but it may well be the battery. Hmmm interesting, not something I considered. I will take it to a friend of mine to have it drop tested and see if I need a replacement battery.......... I think I might. If so this could be the resolution. I will let you know how I get on,

thanks for the post,
Rick

It sounds like it could be fuel cut/overboost(easily caused in the colder weather),the light will come on if this happens-but will go out by itself if it doesnt detect any more overboost for the next 5 or so engine starts.
I have a SECS monitor, and it has been worth its weight in gold especially for the reset function (throws up cat inefficiency code/CEL now and again due to decat which doesnt clear unless the ecu is reset). Its great for monitoring many different parameters-ie air fuel ratios, peak boost, knock correction, gives all fault codes+ much more. Costs about £350 iirc.

Rick

You can re-set the ECU by disconnecting the battery but it does not clear errror codes or the error code history. The reset removes the "learning component" of the maps resets the advance multiplier AFAIK

Personally I'd not go to Well lane but stick to specialists who do almost 100% scooby work. Is Chesterfield anywhere near you 'cos that's were Scoobyclinic hang out. Prosport in Stockport also get good write ups but may be a bit far. maybe a post in scoobynet general asking for specialists in your area migh be helpful.

AFAIK Well lane are "Superchips" dealers and it might be one of these in your car, I think it's a daughterboard soldered to the ECU which increases boost / ignition advance and poss fueling. It's not mappable though and the setting's can't be changed. As mentioned by easyrider the cold dense air at the moment increases boost and you might be getting in the area of fuel cut but I'm not sure what the chip does about that !! Don't be surprised if a specialist advises removing the additional chip if present and suggests maping the (very capable) OEM ECU. Ninny bobs runs 400 plus BHP on his bugeye with the OEM ECU.

If it's any consolation my battery is struggling in this weather and I'm on the look out for a better one.

Cheers

Shaun

PM me if you want any more info about Well Lane as I bought my MY02 bugeye from them

Rick, as others have already said on your MY WRX you have green connectors under the dash, like these ones on the Reading ECU codes page.

I'm sure you can still read the code using the above instructions even on your MY. I have a MY03 WRX and am sure when I had a fault code recently it was flashing at me. I wasn't paying much attention as I was in the process of resetting my ECU, so all did was check that it has now been cleared.

Let us know what you find out.

Crispy

I thought the Newage used the OBD II error codes which have five digits.....for example PO420 is the cat below efficiency code (de-cat) ??

I apologise if I have posted incorrect info

Midlife you haven't posted wrong as you said earlier you can only read the fault codes either with a select monitor /secs/delta dash via the obd port under the steering wheel on the newage/blobeye

Midlife, Gussy,

Thanks for clarifying this, apologies for confusing the issue. FYI - I've correct my technical article on this.

Default WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO SORTED!!!!!!

Well looks like this little conundrum has been solved, thanks EVERYONE for all your help.....brilliant forum this k_duraman cracked it this time.... cheers Matt, nail hit right on the head!!
Picked myself a new battery up for £32 and its a great improvement its a heavy duty model. No more horrid Orange light!!! all is good.

However, before this post, I did plug in the 2 green cables (no black cables present like the classic) re a previous post thanks grahamfrary, and this still worked it seems with just using the green calbes re a later post by crispyduck cheers Steve.....
no codes were flashed apart from I'm a happy Scooby and after about 5 ignition starts the orange light turned off. so this pointed to the old battery!!
On the plus side driving the Scoob under 3000 revs has given me brilliant fuel economy but was real boring driving it like a pensioner in a 1.0 Fiat Panda
So boost is back and all is GOOD
thanks again everyone case closed
cheers Rick/Larsdowg
