As it's your own time - as long as possible!
Leave the oil to drain as you change the filter and give a good visual check of everything while you're under the car.

Make sure you warm the car up first that way it will drain quicker/better that if its cold.
just make sure you turn it off before you drain it

As said before, do it warm, once the oil has drained then attack the filter. Then by the time you've pre filled the new one (takes at least 15 mins) stick it on and then fill the engine with oil.

Doesn't do any harm to remove the oil filler cap either as it is supposed to purge the system when you remove the sump plug.

I may be mad, but whats the difference in doing it warm, or cold, after all, when the engine is cold, 100% of the time, it was warm before it cooled down, therefore, all the oil will be at the lowest point of the engine, ie sump, whereas if you run the engine til warm, you've spread it all over the motor, i prefer to do mine cold, that way my hand doesn't get HOT oil all over it whilst removing the sump plug.....
