Question Intermitant non start Just clicks - any ideas

Just recently i have been having problems with starting the car MY95 import turbo, as you turn the key it just clicks i have to keep turning the key till it eventually starts it is and intermitant problem and it varies on the amount of time i have to turn the key before it will start. I know that this problem is usually the starter motor and it is the solinoid clicking but the starter motor was replaced just over a year ago when the clutch was done. I was wondering if it could be a poor earth

Anybody had same problem or any ideas???

How are your battery terminals? are they corroding at all and are the clamps on tight?

Think the battery is about 2 years old - once it turns over it seems to turn over ok not slugish at all - what is the life of a battery?? the terminals are tight and look clean

the same sort of thing was happening to me and it turned out that the car was not grounded / earthed right causing it to start every now and then until it would not start and the only way I could start it was to bump start the old girl.

Cleaned of the conection for the ground / earth wire and there's been no other problem starts every time, touch wood

Bad earth. Make sure the earth connection from the starter motor is well attached and clean.

Not saying its the battery it's self, just the terminals.

Only reason I said it was the same thing happened to me up to the point that it just wouldn't start. Starter motor was still ticking when I tried to start the engine over but wouldn't turn over at all.

Called the AA out and he tested the battery (showed no fault and was showing a high charge). He cleaned the terminals and put the clamps back on nice and tight and she started straight away (needed no jump what so ever). Never had a problem since.

Quite possibly a duff starter motor, but easy to eliminate bad earthing before you go changing it out. Stick a jump lead from the negative terminal to a bolt on the outside of the starter motor - if it immediately improves then the earth is crap.

With the key held in the "start" position, get a friend to tap the starter solenoid with a hammer. This sympton is usually indicative of burnt or worn solenoid contacts.
