probably already know the answer to this but...
I have a my93, that is more or less standard apart from exhaust (cat back) and induction kit. (does have a bleed valve but this is turned to minimum) I have had this about a month.
The other day I was cleaning the car the exhaust backbox tailpipe was quite sooty. I cleaned this but again today I noticed that it was sooty again.
The car doesnt burn any oil, there is no smoke or anything else suspicious like that.
Does this mean that my car is running very rich? (would explain my economy)
As it is a my93 does that mean I cant have this mapped but would have to resort to something like an apexi power fc?

I also have a '93 with a fair amount of soot inside the tailpipe. Mine is burnt on though with the flames I sometimes get from the de-cat
It will run a bit rich as all Jap import cars do and I am also guessing that this is the cause of the soot. I was a bit worried about this, but had the spark plugs changed after 2 years of use recently and the mechanic could not believe how clean they were.
I dont think it should be anything to worry about if the car is running ok otherwise. You can have the fueling checked though for peace of mind.
The standard ECU cant be re-mapped, so your only options there are a re-mappable chip (eg a scoobyECU from Scoobyclinic), something like a Unichip or a complete replacement mappable ECU like you said

yeah recently changed the plugs on mine as well, never seen used plugs so clean. Still changed them though anyway as a matter of course.
Think I will look out for a power FC when funds allow
