Car Starting Problems - Tries to then dies... Any ideas?
Fitted a replacement 1992 Legacy Turbo Lump in my 1997 UK Turbo as it was all I had. Changed the LH intake cam wheel but left the crank pickup pulley as it 'looks' the same. Timed up the engine perfectly. Swapped headers and complete inlet onto the engine. Also swapped oil cooler due to slight damage.
Starts up the car on a completely standard ECU. It turns over no problem, but then tries to start and cuts out as if something isn't being read properly by the ECU.
Running on 97 Crank and Cam sensors too. Changed them. All the same colour. No difference.
Timing belt is perfect. Not a tooth out or anything.
Error codes are 11 (Crankshaft Position Sensor), 21 (Coolant Sensor) and 31 (Throttle Position Sensor).
As the engine is cold I wouldn't of thought it could be the coolant sensor? Or could it? Would the throttle position sensor cause this error too?
Any help appreciated.

The coolant sensor is the most likely if the car fires up then dies, had this on my pug, terrible when cold, stalled etc, ran great when hot as it uses the hot configuration as a safety.
Not expensive, worth trying.

Cheers Tony, it doesn't actually run completely. It splutters and dies before actually completely starting if you see what I mean?
Do have a few spare coolant sensors so will swap them tommorrow
Any other ideas?
Cheers!

coolant sensor error it runs rich and fans run constant.. fail safe for both hot and cold iyswim..
Reset the ecu so you have no error codes and then try.. are all the same error codes still there?
Is fuel pump running for initial prime and whilst cranking?

Yeah see what you mean.
Yep same error codes after a reset. Reset being battery off for 2 hours and on again.
Fuel pump runs, primes ignition system and then cuts out after about 2-3 seconds as normal......
So coolant sensor isn't the answer then
Any other ideas Simon?
Cheers!

so throttle position sensor isn't correct then..
I think phase 1.5 goes from low voltage on low throttle to high voltage on full so it sounds like it is reading full throttle, starting then going out of idle control settings as it thinks throttle is open.. but no air so just floods and stalls?!
What happens if you disconnect throttle position sensor or hold the throttle open?

OK.... kick me..... Throttle position sensor was faulty.... BUT..... The reason it didn't start and kept cutting out.... is.....
Due to timing up everything wrong
Well the crank pulley lined up with the notch at the front of the pulley, not the line at the back. Luckily I didn't bend any valves which quite shocked at. The crank pulley was quarter of a revolution out.
Redid cambelt and fired first time.
Thanks for all the comments guys. Appreciated
Rule - After working for 12 hours on your car and you are tired stop... Cos thats when you f*ck up.
