Default Help..fitting scoobyecu right now...problem

So I crack open the ecu about 5 minutes ago...there is the space for the new chip, but it is just a space marked out by 2 rows of solder dots...it's not a socket to push anything in to...so can't fit chip . Am I supposed to solder the carrier or even the chip straight in.
And does it matter which way round the chip is fitted???
It's a Z4 ecu on a WRX import saloon...96

Any one with some speedy advice as am stuck now!

Thanks

Is it a three or four connector ecu? Sounds like your MY96 is actually a MY97 which started in Sept 1996, if so the ecu upgrade is not suited.

There are 2 rows of 14 holes which make a 28-Pin DIL arrangement.
You need to suck all the solder out of the holes using a good quality solder iron and a solder sucker.

you can then either drop the Chip straight in and solder it or fit a 28-pin DIL 0.6" socket, then just push the chip into that.

Yes, it does matter which way it goes. there is a white outlin of the chip on the board. It show an indent on one of the short edges, this matched the indent on the chip.

with the ECU in the same orientation as below, the indent on the chip goes to the left.

As Scott has said you need to remove the solder from the 28 holes within the outline and either solder a DIL 28 pin holder in or solder the chip in directly and its orientation is critical - be aware though if you are not competant with a soldering iron get someone to do it for you who is as it is easy to damage the tracks on the main board if you apply to much heat to them, also the board is double sided (tracks on the top and bottom of board)

Cheers
