Default CEL on....Why????

I got in my car this morning and went to pick up my folks....and the CEL light came on.....

car is running fine, no weird noises and still making peak boost and feeling great. I went to go out again and the CEL light went off when i started the car.....i drove to a meet and parked up, no problem.

Then when i come to leave, i pull away and the light comes on again.....and stayed on all the way home.

I changed my backbox yesterday from a TSL group N, to a Ninja. That is thew ONLY thing that i have touched....

can anybody hypothesise what could be up? as the car is running better than ever with the new backbox on!!

thanks for anyhelp.

Could be any of a huge number of things, many of which would be of little concern (intermittent misfire on a dodgy batch of fuel, for example), some of which could be of major concern. You need to read the code - how depends on which model year the car is etc (older ones can do with plugs under the dash, newer you need a SECS or other diagnostic type kit).

if you have a good dealer they will read the code for free, it takes around 30 seconds... The Preston dealership wants £40 for 'diagnosis' i.e. reading the code, must think owners were born stupid.

As Hades says, your MY will affect how you can do things. Classic shapes are I suppose easier, becuase you can connect up the leads under the steering column and 'see' the code for yourself. Later MY's are different.

Assuming it's a classic, do a quick search and you'll find details of which wires to hook up, sounds tricky, but really isn't. You then just check out how many times the CEL flashes - again, sounds odd in writing, but makes perfect sense in reality.

It's probably not that serious (although you need to check it out) and may be somthing simple like Lambda (code 32) or something.

Neil,
There's so many codes and their causes that it really needs to be linked to Select or delta dash.
Do you know which code is printed on the ECU box?
If its AH 750 5141 then pop it over to me and I'll rig up delta dash on it?

Nick

im not sure but it should be the same as yours? i may be able to check it on delta dash at the weekend as id already asked a friend but if hes not about then that would be appreciated.

I have a feeling that the car has a little too much oil in it so maybe its clogged up one of the sensors. I did feel a very slight stutter when booting ti in 3rd gear but i just put that down to my clutch beginning to give up....

Thanks though Nick, as i really really want the car running ok for japfest!!

(im only around at the weekends though )

As Bob mentioned above....EGT sensor is in a bit of a vulnerable place I'd either change the sensor or remove and go for a 2.2 Ohm CEL fix (search will help here)

Bob, i will be emailing you a spreadsheet on the boost my cars running from delta dash, it seemed to be rock steady at 1.27bar, when you mapped it to 1.4? would just be interesting to know your thoughts....

I will try and mail it tonight.
