Question Hybrid electronic Boost Controller

Anybody have any experience, or knowledgable views on these.

How does it compare to its more expensive rivals. Apexi AVCR, HKS EVC5, Blitz SBC , etc.

I know it has no visual display, but can it do its job ( control boost ) aswell as these more expensive ones.

There is little published information on it that is easily found unlike the flashing like the expensive rivals, so a few questions for Harvey on features would help product placement if he is agreeable:

1. Is it aware of throttle position?
2. Can the boost be mapped by RPM?
3. Does it self learn and/or are there multiple settings to calibrate the boost?
4. Does it know what gear you are in?
5. What signals does it connect to?

Usually you can tell all of this from an installation manual, but I couldn't find one on the interweb.

Would be interested in one if it does all or some of the above.
Currently thinking of an apexi due to it's RPM mapping ability.

Spoke to Harvey today and had a look at it, he kindly offered for us to try it, but no suitable car to do that on at present. It has its own solenoid which appeared to be good quality, hose, ties etc, and is a neat unit with two rotatory adjustments and a lo-hi switch on the unit. It is not RPM aware from a brief discussion with Harvey. Apparently users of the unit have been very happy. I could classify it more by seeing the instructions - particularly what signals it splices into.

John, et al,

I have been using one of these units for a while, and have to say despite it's aparent simplicity it does exactly what it says on the tin - It's amazingly easy to set up, holds boost very well and doesn't slug spool up too much.

On my setup boost didn't wander by more than 1kPa (0.01) bar throughout the midrange and then slowly tapered off at the topend as my TD05 couldn't keep up.

It's kind of like a well setup MBC with 2 switchable boost level and autocorrection for little changes without having to fiddle with it every couple of months and play with the actuator pre-tension to get the top end boost profile right.

I think most people with some sort of TD05 hybrid would find it very useful as they tend to run a reasonably flat boost 'curve'.

Andrew...

Warning: Don't play with it in the dark 'cos the FCD does work, my boost gauge goes to 30psi and the needle hit the stop one night when I slipped whilst tweeking it on the move

Does it run closed loop control Andrew ? Or just set a WG duty blind ? I don't understand how it could control a MY95 car at 19psi boost for example

Yes it does run closed loop control using a MAP sensor.

However, it doesn't have to be the OEM sensor or even the one the ECU is using?

No it doesn't have it's own MAP sensor. It uses a MAP signal for it's closed loop control, what I was saying is that on a ph.1 car you could use a separate MAP sensor from the std one.

Like Andrew says, the EBC also acts as a fuel cut defender so it represents very good value for money.
Bob Rawle is using one on his STi5.
Andy, you had one previously but did not try it out. Would you like one to try now?

Thanks Harvey but for my current cars I need rpm dependant boost targets to achieve my aims.
