Default Cracking/creaking from steering

I have a bugeye (MY00) WRX Wagon that has started making a cracking/creaking noise when i perform a reverse turn hard left (full lock). The noise happens when turning wheels back to other lock aswell. The noise seems to be worse when car has been left for anything over an hour.

There is no noise when on the move, its just low speed manouvering.

Car is off to dealer tomorrow (got a 12 month Proven warranty) to check it out.
Anyone got any ideas just in case they try and fob me off.

cheers

I had a similer problem with MY98, though an older car..that was dues to the heat shield in the engine bay...

if i was stationary and reved the car to 2000 and turned the wheel it would make a noise...

Not heat shield. Had that in my MY00 sport, this is definitely steering/ joints or something in that area.

just back from dealers. they cant find anything obvious, and the noise is less when weather is warmer!!

they had the car for 4 hours and looked at everything. will see how it goes today and they said maybe leave with them again and they will swap bits around.

nowts gonna fall off but noise is annoying on a performance car

James TypeR, WVOC

I was about to post a similar problem and saw this thread. I run a STi V5 and just lately noticed a "klonck" noise when Reversing (slowly) on full lock - left or right. There is only a single "klonck", and doesn't manifest if I drive back a bit quicker and in a "continuous" move (i.e. not slowly as you would in a carpark/stop-go, etc). Not sure if this means different loading? No other adverse noise, car always driven moderately.

Anyone with more info/experience?

Cheers

Did some digging around. One possible cause, from the symptoms, could be "Pad Knock". When reversing (and left standing for a while) is that the Pads are being made to go the opposite way on the Discs - they sometimes catch/stick and the "forced" release will cause the noise. Did you renew the pads recently, but not the Discs? I did, and about to dismantle and clean/copper grease again, etc

Bearings? Hhhmmm - surely you would hear noise while driving, specially if you turn the steering from side to side, etc?

For courtesy, check out www.sideauto.co.uk (not related - no info on this there!). It's Richard Grimes - the original founder of SIDC!

[No noise on the move so as you say not bearings.

just had pads and discs done after dealer visit, all cleaned and greased..noise still there.

Noticed that dealer had copper slipped the pads too when i was there. Car is back off to the dealers next week for a wholeday (glad its got a warranty). They think it may be related to a suspension strut as there is also a creaking niose when breaking

will keep you posted.

Yes, does seem yours might be something else - since you hear something under braking too.

Good thing you have the "free warranty". Just to clarify, my symptoms were more a klonk/knock type noise - not creaking really.

Let me know what you find.

Cheers
