I have an oil burning smell coming into the car (my94 wrx) on investigation its coming from the drivers side of the engine bay and the smoke seems to be coming from the exhaust pipe area anyone have any ideas?

Hi mate check your rocker cover gaskets - I have the same problem and my mechanic has suggested this.

Cheers.

I'd almost guarantee that's what it is.
The driver's side one dries out and leaks because of the heat from the exhaust passing just underneath.

It's a pretty easy job to do yourself, a couple of hours taking it easy and careful, nothing heavy or tight. Make sure you do the seals on all the bolts too if you do decide to do it yourself.

Have a look at power steering reservoir/pump too........ the bearings on my pump decided to call it a day, emptied all the contents directly on the heat shield/exhaust and had a nice little fire going (enough for a couple of marshmellows) before I put it out.....

I`ll go with rocker cover gaskets as well.
They harden and weep with age.
Its a labour intensive job so could be expensive for what it is.

I have just rebuilt engine on 93 wrx
I think it is main dealer
you need 2 spark plug gaskets, 1 rocker and 6 bolt rubbers
part numbers
spark plug ; 11051AA070 £8 each
rocker cover ; 13270AA040 £8.98 each
bolt rubbers ; 13271AA051 £2 each

I also used gasket sealer about £13 for a large tube it is different to normal gasket sealer as it is high temp resistant i got this from AS performance ask for Alan he may even have some spare gaskets lying around as i got some parts for engine rebuid from
him at very cheap prices , make sure you degrease everything before you put together i got a can of degreaser spray for about £3 helps the sealer .
