In line 4 cylinder engines are compact. Flat four engine have the advantage of not having to fight against gravity when in the compression/exhaust strokes. They also have the advantage of having a very low centre of gravity. 'V' engines also tend to be used for compact power.

The Flat Four has a low centre of gravity, which is one of the
atributes that adds to the Scooby's superb handling (The pistons move sideways as apposed to up and down on a straight Four.More kinetic energy is required on the up phase of a Straight four therefore not producing as much power).

Straight Six is same as Four but obviously has two more pistons.

V6 has Six pistons moving at a 45> angle same as V8 which has Two more pistons.

If i'm wrong on any of the above i'm sure i'll be put right.

Chris - You beat me to it hence it look's like i'm repeating !!!!!!!
