Standing start = smelly clutch...gulp
Hi all, I've got a 53 plate WRX that has done 4,000 miles. Up until today I had never launched it - I was stuck trying to get onto a large roundabout - saw an opportunity in front of a truck and launched the Scoob from about 6,000 rpm. I would never normally do this to the car, but I'd been stuck waiting for about 10 minutes...anyways I could smell the clutch all the way home (about 20 minutes later). The car seems to pull away fine...can they stand this type of abuse? I remember reading stuff about Classics developing clutch judder if they weren't launched frequently.
I won't be doing it again, but just wondered if I could have done any long term damage (I think I've got away with it!). I had a mate with a Sunny GTiR that drove like a *** - he was always going through clutches...
How strong is the standard clutch?

Should have been an awesome get away; with all wheels screeching, bit of sideways movement.......
Won't do any long term damage, give it around another 6 goes at those revs & you'll need a new clutch.......
Don't believe everything you read
You'll clucth will last providing this isn't a regular occurence...........

I've had clutch judder since getting my P1. I accidently launched my car at around 5-6Krpm, the cabin filled with a horrible acrid smell, I was a bit worried to say the least!
However, now the clutch is perfect, no judder, not even when stone cold. Infact, now I can take it out of the garage in the morning only using the clutch, no accelerator!
Can anyone explain why this fixed my problem?
Sorry to semi-hijack btw!

My 02 STi stinks you out of the car when doing hill starts or semi hard lauches ( just ask Richard Askew ) and its done over 45000 miles now WITH the cold start "judder" since new and still seems to be going strong. Dont know if yours is the STi but they do seem to stand some decent abuse.

Sometmes the plate becomes contaminated, by launching it a 6k, it will in some instances clean all the debris off & improve it; in some cases it won't & you'll soon find a new clutch is in order

Our car, albeit its an old MY93 one, has done 60k miles and also stinks to high heaven after a hard start. Its scared the hell out of me first time I launched properly as I could see the £££s needed to repair it dwindiling out of my account.
It seems its normal though, nothing to worry about
