what causes an impreza engine to run bad when cold?
MY mate has a problem with his impreza running bad when cold. It does not start very well and seems to run generally bad untill warm. When its warm though the car runs fine. I know all you techies out there to answer this question is going to be hard untill you had actually see the car, so are there just some general things to check and look out for? I thought maybe a cel check would bring up something? As usual any help would be appreciated.

Mine has the same proplem at the moment mate and ive "BEEN TOLD" that it could be either the Air Flow Meter failing or a coolant tempreture sensor up the creek, thats just wat i was told though.....im not overly mechanically minded though.....

Are the rad fans on when first started? - indicator to coolant temp.
Could otherwise be the earthing is corroded as they are crap in the first place.
Worth earthing neg battery to engine block etc..
Coil packs depending on age of car (coil packs on Pre 97 cars) but usually other symphtoms on boost misfire for example.
Plugs need replacing.. NGK PFR6R's set to 0.7mm gaps.
Try resetting the ecu and see if it gets worse of better..
MAF failing is usually hand in hand with stalling or lumpy idle when hot.
Worth checking for error codes too..
Ecu reset, error code and sensor location info here
