Default What make a STI5 diff from a MY00

The first scooby I every got taken for a ride was a STI5 with 280bhp. What I would like to know is what makes it kick out 280bhp over the a standard MY00 with 215bhp.

Ray

Not plannning to mod it to the same performance as a STI5 unless I turn 25 years old in the next hour.

I think:
different fuel grade for starters.
uprated turbo, uprated engine internals, alloy bonnet, alloy wishbones(?), uprated suspension, pink badge
thats a start, theres more though but cant remember it

cams, valves, springs, retainers, pistons, turbo suspension components, boost level, ecu and again as above ron rating of allowable fuel.

The most crucial difference is the lack of a bright switch and the rev counter being correctly placed in the middle!

wow. I was just expecting something simple like ECU and zorst.

I guess it will be cheaper to do ECU and de-cat to get 280bhp than change everything to get it like the STI5.
Will an ECU and zorst get 280bhp?

with supporting mods you will get a uk car to sti performance.
but ask yourself if your willing to get hooked on modding, its an expensive game!

my car:
uk99
H&S decat downpipe
decat centre
rear silencer
green cotton filter
samco turbo/coolent hoses
stiV intercooler
boost gauge/knock link/ afr meter
dawes device MBC

this little lot got me near as damnit to 260 bhp on optimax fuel, which is wrx classic territory I think.

to get to sti territory I am having to junk a lot of it and add:

td05 F/E turbo
Apexi pfc
Apexi commander
Apexi AVCR
walboro fuel pump/regulator
intercooler waterspray
custom map by a mr Forrest

as you start modding then future mods to gain performance become increasingly expensive.
You better wait til your 25 so you can get a liverppol/victoria policy or have a very understanding broker!

good luck

Don't worry Ray - get those alloy pedals on and you'll be straight up to 280bhp!!

Kind regards

its cheaper in the long run to buy an sti then mod but depending on how you mod your uk car it doesnt take much to get them quicker than an sti

Gearbox is the same, as is the diff.

centre diff will be either 12kgm or 20kgm viscous, mroe likely the former.

Apparently sti gears are different but I have never seen it. Ratios are the same, difference is final drive which is 3.9 in a uk via a 1.1:1 transfer case which means rear crown wheel and pinion ratio is actually 3.54.

Sti final drive is 4.44 with a 1:1 transfer case meaning same number of teeth on front and rear crown wheels/pinions.

Im sure the sti has shorter gears than a uk model.

Are you saying that a uk99 rear diff is identical to an sti of the same year?

I believe the STi has these ratios:

3.166
1.882
1.296
0.972
0.738

And the uk has these:

3.454
1.947
1.366
0.972
0.738
