Exclamation MAF

Guys

Is it possible to repair the MAF on a 99 Classic scooby. Just took it to the service station today, and they said my MAF is shafted. Stange thing is now they have found this problem it keeps wanting to stall.

What would I be looking at to purchase and new one, and where could I source it from ? Would I have to go to the dealer. I would want to replace the part myself, also is there any way of testing the old one before I go and invest the cash ?

thanks in advance, top guys

can anyoone confirm that

Part no 22794AA010 Meter CP-air flow is the part number for a my99

if you go into the dealer asking for a new maf sensor make sure they don't try to charge you for all the housing and stuff (this costs circa £270).

Yeah mate, JB's right. Should be about £70/80. Dealers will normally try to supply you with the whole housing as well, you only need the sensor itself. 2 minute job to change just 1 plug and 2 screws holding it in.

And don't mess about either, MAF's are renowned for failing on MY99/00's and are known to take engines with them

taking the engine :O, I have read that you can buy a chip which bypasses the MAF anyways its it worth the upgrade or not ?

Maybe an aftermarket ECU at many hundreds of pounds can do without the MAF and relying on the MAP instead, but not heard of a chip to bypass MAF yet.
Unless you mean Superchip which just fools ECU into thiking there is less boost ( with a bleed valve ) and allows a bit more boost, although without the ECU controlling the needed or ignition advance fuel.

There are after market piggy back boards ( ScoobyECU, Vos, Unichip etc ) which can re-programme the ECU to act differently on MAF / boost/ etc signals...

Uneven idle, weak Air/Fuel ( AFR ) ratio's ( if you have a guage ) and if you reset the ECU then car runs really rough as the learning of the performance of the failing MAF has been learned and compensated for and after reset it is lost.

Worse case - melted engine parts ...

Best case, no probs, just clean MAF sensor and pipework and carry on!

Hope it saved the engine! And you get sorted soon.

Look on here ( for sale forums ) and ebay for second hand MAFs, save money!

For later cars the MAF is £70 UK as you can change just the sensor not all the housing ( which then costs £270 UK )!!
