Hi,

My car was last serviced at 35,000 and is now on 41,000, the previous owner gave it the 45,000 mile service last (ie with cambelt) and i can verify it did recieve this. Therefore it should really be having an oil change about now, if not a little while ago, what oil should i use, previous owner used mobil 1 10w 50. Is this ok? someone has recomended using 0w 40 as it will have much less friction, apparently he felt the difference when he took the car for a drive after warming up! i am unsure of this and not sure how reliable the information is, any advise greatly appreciated,

This is such an extensive subject, but I shall just give my opinion:

I run Castrol RS 10-60. Have been advised NOT to use 0-40 or 0-50 in a Turbo engine.

0w/40 is alright if you live in a cold climate and never drive the car hard until the oil is fully up to temperature.

You'll be fine with the forementioned Castrol RS 10w/60, Motul 300V 15/50, or indeed the 15/50 "Motorsport" version of Mobil 1.

I'm using 5w/40, at the moment, just had a new bottom end so I think that this is the best option for me just now.

Although I'm sure that most Subaru garages use 5w/40, as that is what Prodrive recomends.

Nah. For starters, Prodrive don't generally "recommend" a 5/40, and even if they did, most Subaru garages use whatever they can get cheapest, provided it satisfies the nominal requirements of the oil.

greasemonkey, never really looked at it like that before (the choice of oil used by the garage that is) my dealer uses shell helix (10/40 i think) is this oil ok? the price they charge i'm sure i could get a better alternative if need be.

cheers

The 10/40 version of Helix is actually called Helix Plus. It's not bad, and is actually about the perfect oil to use over the first 7-10,000 miles of the car's life, as it helps complete the running-in process.

After that period though, a fully synthetic oil of the correct viscosity will provide slightly better protection and lower component wear. I'd certainly recommend one of the three above in preference to the Shell stuff, provided of course your car is more than 7-10,000 miles old.

Ive just had a service done at Robinsons, they use Shell Helix Ultra... its 5w40.
I take it this is a good oil or should I change it to Silkolene Pro stuff?
I`m wondering if I should use an independant next service.

Scooby dealers in Denmark never use enything else than Castrol RS 10/60

I would recommend the same or the Motul 300V 15/50 - best for the scooby in all conditions!
