Will the td05 fit straight on to an my97 td04 car without any work (apart from fitting)

Obviously I'll need a remap and some bigger injectors, but will that be enough?

You'll need the turbo converted to front entry, but once done, should be straightforward to fit.

And you won't NEED bigger injectors and a remap unless you really want one or unless you are planning to run very high boost.

If I had a pound for every time I've said that.

I too have a 97 UK and am hoping to crack 350bhp in the New Year (344 at the mo) on the standard ECU and injectors, so don't believe everything you read or are told.

Yes, the MY96 UKs had the TD05 as standard

It was changed to the TD04 on UKs at the facelift in MY97.

Yes, that's correct, those too, but only the sedans, early WRX wagons had right angle entry TD04s.

Nick,

By possessing incredible skill

It's a simple formula really. More air, more fuel and sufficient thermal management and high enough octane levels to avoid det.

I've fitted bigger turbo, bigger intercooler, bigger fuel pump and reg, the usual exhaust and induction mods, higher boost, lots of lagging and cold air supply, lots of NF and a few other clever little mods and away you go.

There's lots of threads about with my full spec on if you are interested.

Cheers

Red face

Rich,

Sorry... but..

To say std injectors and ecu is erm.. well erm.. confusing..

Fuel and boost controllers might play a part.

I seriously disagree that std injectors and std fuel pressure with pump petrol can do 350+ bhp, and I would recommend anyone reading this thread pay carefull attention to overboost, poor fuel, high egt's and weak mixtures..

Theres a lot more to tuning than winding up the boost and removing fuel cut..

Not a dig at you rich, but im just warning people, as I keep refusing to remap for 20 - 22psi on std cars.

However how many cc's of pump fuel do you think you require per bhp??

The ignition will be too much advanced at high revs when using a bigger turbo and more boost in combination with the standard ECU! (mixture is not too bad) If you want to try, please install a Knock Link.........

Fair point David, you are right.

Sorry if it was misleading.

I do use a boost controller and have invested mucho dosh in safety devices, such as Electronic EGT and boost gauges with peak hold, Knocklink, Lambdalink and I've had the car checked on numerous occasions with a wideband. I do run increased fuel pressure 3.0 bar at idle, but other than the pump and reg I have no other fuelling mods other than 100ml NF per tankful.

Mark wild,

I've no site I'm afraid but if you mail me I can chat about my spec.

Cheers Rich

Rich,
How are you managing to run enough boost for you to see 344hp with no ignition modifications (None Listed)?

Cheers

The OEM ECU runs a lot of advance at the top end which is why Rich gets this much BHP, however, I think he will admit that he loses out on torque compared to a remapped car.

Rich does however prove how far you can get with relatively few mods IF you know what you are doing.

Andrew...

Exactly Andrew,

Torque is only 295lbsft at the mo, and I reckon 300 will be hard to crack without a mappable ECU.

With a Link or wotnot my torque could be well in the 300s I imagine.

Cheers

Yes I agree/know the oem ecu runs alot of advance at the mid - top end but this also leads to detonation with the addition of increased boost

Thumbs up

If you can run enough octane and keep the air cool at higher boost, then the std ECU advance is excellent (on 95 Ra)
My 432 bhp and 365ft-lb torque at well lane was on the totally std ECU. I then spent a fortune on a mapable ecu, headers etc and added 8bhp to this figure !!

Andy
Edited to add that this was with the 20g compressor. The TD05's best was 369bhp 350ft-lbs on the std ECU

Not when it was dyno'd back then. It does now, well sort of, Pavlo has done a custom map for me. I don't think it will have much more power but the driveability is improved as it takes account of the larger injectors now. It is also very quiet on the knocklink just running Optimax and no booster.
