Unhappy

I have someone coming to view the car tomorrow and had it in the garage this morning checking a serious hesitancy problem. It turned out that a "nipple" at the top of the engine was uncovered so a rubber plug was put on to block it off. Since then the boost has been fine and pick up is constant and back to normal. However, when pulling up to a juction or coming to a stop especially where turning is involved, the engine stalls. The revs are erratic at idle between say stall and 900 rpm. Even when stopped, when I rev the engine, it seems to search around for a stable rev at the low range. Would disconnecting the battery do any good i.e. resetting the ecu?

Any advice would be graefully received as a sale could be hanging on this and I'm sure it must be something simple as she never stalled once before.

Thanks

Jerome

Question

I take it you mean the rubber bung at the front of the engine when your looking into the engine bay? (you normally find that they attach boost gauges here).

The stalling sounds like a MAF sensor on its way out, does it do it at any other time?

Yes Tony, I just had the defis removed. I had a K&N 57i induction kit on it for a few months up until a week ago and before that, a panel filter for a couple of years. Is a maf sensor expensive and how long does it take to do.

Many thanks

sounds likely the MAF sensor is dead, especially as you had an induction kit on there. Dont drive the car on boost at the higher rev range, MAF sensor is one the main reasons these engines fail.

They cost £75 for a new one.

Thanks guys, I have just done a search on "MAF" and found the part number etc. I shall take it handy into the garage on Monday to get it replaced.

Thanks again for your advice - much appreciated.

Jerome,
Tough break mate, do you know if your car's ever had a new MAF, cos it would seem that the early my2000's had a different MAF to the later cars, I changed mine before I fitted the Induction kit just as a precaution, as I knew that there was an issue with it, it's only a five minute job, is the part no that you've got 22794AA010? cos thats supposed to be the revised one thats better!!

Hope you get it fixed, and sold!!

Ron.
edited to add, it might be best not to let someone else drive it!

Yes Ron, that's the number I picked up from my search.

I'm sure it's just normal wear and tear as against anything specifically to do with the induction kit. I will not be allowing test drives until it's fixed as I do not need the expense of an engine rebuild at this stage that's for sure!

Cheers
