Group Buy on MAFs and Lambda sensors
#1
Reading this section for the past few weeks, I come to the conclusion that people seems to be having problems with MAFs and Lambda sensors. Most of them seem to be MY 99 and MY 00 which would make sense, as they are around 3 to 4 years old now.
I was wondering if it was time for a group buy, as I think I'm going to replace the pair of mine, but I not paying £60 per hour (dealer prices) to do it.
I'm only interested in Geniune Subaru one to be honest. Does anyone know of the best price for these items ?
Thanks Phill

Put me down for a Lambda sensor for a STI4 mate...
Does any one know if the MAF on a STI4 can be replaced with just the sensor or if it is the whole lot. (As in loads of ££££££)

Right then.
It would seem a standard MAF for a MY 99 is part number 22794AA010 and should be around £60 to £75. I understand this is just for the sensor and not the air box section as well.
Do the WRXs and STi need the entire air box, etc ?

Max STi. The STi4 needs the housing as well. Comes as a complete unit and costs a few hundred quid dont often go wrong it seems though.

Phill,
No. The only reason people used to buy the whole section is that Subaru didn't used to sell just the sensor itself.

i belive you cant get a seperate sensor for the v3/4 wrx`s and sti`s?
from what i have read on this board of course
a few hundred quid for a maf isnt very pleasing to the wallet
ive had a look at my maf and a uk model of the same year and cant see how you could just replace the sensor?
a guide with pictures would be good to compare diffrent versions

As metioned on the other post, it is beleived that alot of other cars use the same MAF i.e Audi/Vw/BMW etc..etc....
Does anybody have the Genuine Bosch part number and not the Subaru Specific Part Number.
It would probably save a few quid.
I know the Bosch number on the Lambda is not recognised by Bosch as a general released part (i.e available for sdale direct from Bosch).
So it is thought to be a Bosch/Subaru secret code.

Theres a post somewhere on here for 02/lambda sensors from a company that specialise in CAT parts. Think they were selling the 3 pin sensor for under £50. Not genuine Subaru but works just the same.
There is also a Halfords one for about £30 odd but you have to cut the plug off and solder direct IIRC - wouldn't do that but might be worth buying the £50 as a temporary spare or just to test to see if your O2 is shot.
When I have some time I am going to trawal the whole of this site and try to put together all the options available for these things and some "How tos" to replace/check/clean these things yourself. I'd rather do it myself and know its done rather than hope that Subaru do the job properly while the car is in for service IMHO.

02 Sensors from http://www.cats-direct.com/oxygen_sensors.htm
I got the 4-wire (M18 Thread) version. That way you can run a seprate Earth to the sensor rather then relying on it grounding using the Downpipe.
Cause we all know how good the Subaru Earth circuit is ....

I used a halfords own brand L300 o2 sensor.
£25.
used butt connectors to replace the connector on the loom and its lasting excellently.
MAF I still use a genuine subaru item until a viable a cheaper alternative is sourced.
my advice is to use genuine MAF and pattern 02.

Would you skimp if it came to oil or fuel? Personally, something which controls engine critical fuctions, I wouldn't be messing with Hafords etc...

Im aware of where they're made, my point is that "sometimes" OEM parts are best used for a reason. I wouldn't use Halfords own plugs or oil in my car, nor one of their sensors. Has anyone checked the calibration / voltage outputs of one of these Halfords jobs, compared to a normal one?

You need to compare the airflow to voltage map. Mine was originally intended for a Mercedes 220 CDi and the flow map was almost identical to the VAG version. It's a lot more resilient though.

Is it the same as the UK, cheers.
