Question

i know i could get rid of it by getting a new ecu, but is there any other way???

i'm thinking it may be the cause of a bit of rough idleing but it should be ok as it was only replaced a couple of months ago.

Didn't know you could get rid of the MAF as the ecu relies on it for the correct air flow and hence mixes the right amount of fuel.. i stand to be corrected

MAF measures air flow directly to decide how much fuel to put in.

Other ECU's use a throttle pot and engine revs as inputs. For any measured throttle position and revs the engine will always be sucking in the same amount of air so it can add the fuel to suit. If it's clever it will also measure air temp and baro pressure to fine tune for different ambients that affect air density.

Very much doubt if you can just add a thottle pot to the standard ECU you will need to change to an aftermarket ECU and map it from scratch.

HKS did a speed density (IIRC) device for MAF replacement, but it was horrendously expensive and I think it's discontinued now.
John Banks looked into building and coding some appropriate hard/firmware for doing this a bit ago.

Cube.

A HKS Vein Pressure Convertor (VPC) is what you need...

The HKS VPC is designed to physically and electronically replace OE air metering devices which present a significant restriction to the intake system and offer no adjustment or reprogramming options to take advantage of dramatically higher air flow or larger fuel injectors. The VPC converts both air flow meter and air mass sensor systems to what is referred to as speed density systems by utilizing a 16 bit central processing unit reading its own intake air temperature sensor and absolute pressure transducer (B-MAP sensor) signals. This unique conversion feature not only allows the VPC to replace the factory air flow metering device, but also eliminates the need for a fuel cut defencer. Another benefit of the VPC is the ability to create our own programs to take advantage of larger fuel injectors and new air flow characteristics (larger turbos). In some specific instances, the VPC may be used in addition to the PFC F-Con and larger injectors for the ultimate in HKS plug-in fuel system technology. VPC equipped vehicles respond quicker with improved horsepower. To take full advantage of the VPC, HKS VPC Power Flow adapters with the HKS Super Mega Flow air filter should be used......

That was a bit of a mouthful!!!

See the thread on 22b. When I get my car back I'm going to test it.

Best plan in the end I think is to use an inexpensive microcontroller.

The basic calculation is:

MAF = k * MAP * RPM / charge temperature

RPM is battery voltage pulse on every 20 degrees crank rotation. MAP goes from 0.88 at vac to 4.84 at 1.8 bar boost. Charge temp can be done with a thermocouple.

I hope to have something running and publish all the details - I will probably have it working by the spring

In this case, assuming I'm following this correctly, k must be a constant "scaling factor". Possibly more to the point, John - do you know the value of k yet?
