Question

I have found a strange item in my manual of my MY01WRX.

They say the the most recommended motoroil for the MY01 is a 5W30 !!

But the manual from my former MY99 says that the 5W30 is just NOT recommended for Imprezas with Turbo,...who will be driven fast !

Is there someone who can give me some info abouth this ??

Subaru reccommend shell helix fully synthetic 5w30 when the car is run in, i went with this for the first 5k after the first service and had no problems, i then went to 5w40 and am now on 15w50 mobil1 motorsport (which is for out of warranty) you could see if they do the 5w40 mobil1 over there as that is also reccommended by subaru.

...but why the difference in between MY99 and the MY01.

The 5W30 wasn't that good for the old Scooby's.

I just ordered the 10W40 Motul-Chrono Full Synth.....but maybe this isn't the best oil for a my01 !

Pete or Mike,...can you give some info abouth this ??

You really have 2 choices Theo, the best are 15w50 mobil1 motorsport or 10w60 castrol?
they may not be the reccommendations of subaru but they are better than the thinner 5w30 that shell have to offer you

I'd stick to what you know to be good stuff, give consideration to the climate and use you are putting the car to at that time and buy relevant to those circumstances.

Don't put Fully synthetic in until the car has a decent amount of miles on it (upwards of 5K+), and then choose as above.

The 10w40 is semi synthetic oil compared to the 5w30 fully synthetic.
Also, the modern engine doesnt need that much running in, thus the first 1k service to clean out any burrs out of the engine, 1k is more than enough time to sort any problems out due to modern engineering tecniques and you can run fully synth after that, its up to you if you want semi synth up to the second service thou as Mike says, it depends how you feel.
Ive run a few cars from new after the first service on fully synth and no problems with them 50k plus
