When the Lambda sensor goes does it get less sensative or does it break completely? Can the Lambda sensor be measured with a multimeter?

I'd certainly check the lambda sensor. They don't seem to last too well on our cars. I've had one or two go (5 actually :eek but can see this instantly, with the Lambda Link.
If you need to replace it, stick with the Subaru/Bosch standard sensor. I tried the Lucas/after market products, and they lasted about two months !!!!!!
Mark.

Chris,
I hear you spoke to Ray this morning and are taking the car in on Monday afternoon.
If you're still there at 6ish I'll call in on my way past as I come home from work.
David
<edit because it didn't make sense the first time )

I have a UK MY99 (bog standard) and get 150 to 180 miles on a tank, but Iam a middle age old git in mid life crisis.
My Turbo pulls in when its warm and fifth gear is for double white lines I only ever got over 200mph when the wife comes with me as the 'G' force makes here sick.
On the track I did get 7.2 mph on £0.99p SUL per Ltr

a piece of useless info here when you use the select moniter on a new my01 you can see the temp of the lambda sensor, at 3000 revs it hits 600 degrees c
so what on earth would it hit at 7000 revs
so what on earth would it hit at 7000 revs

Remember that earlier cars only have a 50ltr tank so you wont get great consumption but depends on your driving and how heavy the right foot is you may have a problem, best to get it checked and/or tuned as she may be a bit out

It's real easy to get <100 miles out of a tank if you are booting it... Normal for me was about 150miles per tank.
Best ever in mine was 220 miles... Right ankle ached for days

I used to get around 270 from a tank (needle on top line of 'E') before putting in 50 litres.
Since getting my Magnex decat centre and backbox that is now consistently only 250 miles (three tankfuls with equally mixed driving).
I think the problem is the car now seems to cruise more easily at higher speeds. Sounds like 230 - 260 are acceptable figures for most.

7.2 mph on the track is pretty poor if you can get 200 mph on the open road

Fit an air/fuel ratio meter (LambdaLink) and it'll show the readings the sensor gives out.
My car ran fine but gave very low readings, dealer changed it without question along with ECU reset and now shows correct mixtures once again.
Seems to be a lot crisper too.

Measures the exhaust gas readings in the downpipe and converts this in to an electrical signal that the ECU can read and amend the fuel/air mix that the engine requires at any one given time i.e. load and conditions.

Feel for you m8. Only getting 130 miles per tank myself(11.9 MPG!!! ). Talking to the subaru dealer he said that if the lambda sensor is faulty that the check engine light should come on but he's going to plug the computer in and have a look. He also mentioned that scoob's can't be tuned as such only the spark plugs and air filter replaced. However reading through various other posts dealers do tend to talk alot of sh*t.

Kempo - phewf! After putting on a de-catted Scorpion I had noticed me fuel consumption increasing, but yeah I agree. The car feel easier to boot and it certainly goes better - but I remember on my old Sport the SS backbox actually improved economy!
