Change of Tyres

I own an Impreza 1.6Gli (1998) in Singapore.
Initially, the car comes with tyres of 175 65 R14.
As I wanted a sports rim upgrade, I took up the Subaru original 16" Alumnium alloy rims as in the WRX series which is 205 50 R16 profile.
A few mechanics were telling me that this profile is too heavy for my car as it is only a 1.6l engine. This will caused strain to the drive shaft and increase fuel consumption.
I would like some advice as to what I should do, I love the current alloy rims and hope I do not have to give it up for some cheapo steel rims.
