Yep, that's why people spend up to a couple of a hundred quid on real quickshifts.

Quickshifts work by altering the distance between the stick pivot and the linkage attachment point, reducing the amount of stick translation necessary to make a shift. Cutting your gearstick does not achieve the same thing, all it does is make the gearknob further away from the steering wheel, which is not desirable.

Have you ever heard the old "Ask a silly question you get a silly answer" truism? This was a slightly silly question!

It will make a slight difference cutting the gearstick down as it will reduce the throw of the gearstick between gears, but as mentioned also lowers the gearknob - I made my own quickshift by cutting down the gearstick by 60mm, but also adding 20mm (by welding in part of what I had cut off) between the pivot and linkage, - works really well, movement of the gearstick is significantly reduced, and save lots of $$$

PS makesure your welding is good though, I imagine it would be embarrasing if not dangeroud if your gearstick snappped whilst changing gear

Some of the quick shifts are in fact purely a shorter stick..

I have one sat in the garage waiting to go on.. it is 1cm shorter than the standard stick.

I am tempted to just cut 2cms off the standard stick and sell the quickshift on..

I believe it is 11mm thread for the gear knock.. which is not common but 12mm thread cutter will just about cut enough for the gear **** to latch too..

I cut roughly an inch off the gear stick on sunday and sorry but unless you have short arms the gear stick should not be any further away then before it was cut!! if it is the case you have short arms then move ya seat forward. any way the feel of the shift feels alot better wether that is just in my head it also looks better more MR2 like then Transit like..may not do any thing for the shift action but feels a dam site better.

rant over

Read my post again Morty, I wasn't on about "short arms" or anything like.

I said that if you shorten the stick, the **** will be further away from the steering wheel. Thus, your hand has to move further from wheel to stick and back each time you change gear, which takes a fraction longer.

Why do you think touring cars have long spindly gearsticks that are right next to the steering wheel?

Yes but you don't move the **** as far when you change..

Dunno about you but I can drive one handed.. I know in advance when I am going to change down or up and move my arm to the stick, in advance.. so therefore it speeds up your shifting..

It is more for the feel than anything else..
the steering is sharp, the brakes sharp and good feel from both though the flippin' gear change is like rowing a boat!

Edited as Move is spelt with a V not an R

Brian not sure the wrx gearbox's are the same as the UK turbo think wrx as a type of quickshift already where as the uk as gearing and linkage to suite uk road and driving.
