hey guys,

i'll have had the p1 2 weeks on monday and have clocked 700miles (ish) and LOTS OF FUEL!

but i decided to have a look under the bonnet today to discover the beast is lunnin mighty low on Transmission Oil, Engine Oil, and Coolant!!!!

so my questions are:

what is everyone using/reconmending for
1) Transmission oil
2) Engine coolant
3) Engine Oil.

in the manual, it says dont mix coolants, and that i should top up slowly through the radiator cap and not the pipe thingy on the right side near the battery... is this true?

what viscosities do i use for each?

and are all scoobs this dehyradted after 700 miles - albeit hard running ones...

im not using the baby til these are toped up so if you could help me out on this asap...

do you mean you checked everything 700miles ago and everything was fine......or you have only used for 700mile since delivery and when you've checked its low??
in the first case you may have an issue and would recomend you check it out!! however, in the second case maybe it was low when you got it.??
engine good quality synthetic 10w50, 15w50, 10w60, etc. (assuming its not brand new!!)
g/box min. semi-synth 75w90 (we use full synthetic.....)
rear diff the same unless it has an LSD in which case you will need LSD specific oil!!

For starters, shame on you for not checking levels sooner
If all these levels are very low, i would call into question the previous owners habits of looking after the car!
Anyway, rant over, moving on.
Castrol syntrax for the gearbox/centre diff.
Engine, 15/50 mobil motorsport or Motul 300v or castrol RS.
These seem to be the most used oils on here.
As for coolant, not sure. If it only needs a pint or so, top it up with water.
And i hope your running it on optimax!

I spose it depends on the milage you do.
I have to admit to saying things like, 'if it dont leak, why check it all the time' We have blokes at work, 6 month old Hylux, they check the oil and water every bloody morning! The thing only does about 40 mile a day. a bit OTT.
If its my own car, and i know it has no leaks, i check about once a week and i dont do many miles.
Its a piece of string question i spose.
All engines will use 'some' oil, no matter how good it is.

Yes. Way to check the rear diff level is to take the top plug out. Level is correct when the oil is level with the base of the drain plug, so obviously you've got to check on a flat surface.

In the centre diff/gearbox use castrol syntrax.
I have since found out (from here) that the rear diff on the Type R must use a LSD specific oil, hence im prety sure the P1 has the same rear diff and so a LSD specific oil should be used in this also. Cant say as ive seen it around but i havnt needed it. I would think Halfords or a Suburu dealer would flog you some.

Ramps are more trouble than they're worth checking the rear diff oil level. Don't forget you'd need four to keep the car level.

You can do it easily enough with the car on the floor, just stick a sheet down and slide under the back.
