Do you have a new age or classic shape car? If the latter, you can join together the black "read memory" connectors under the steering column and find out exactly what caused the CEL.

Much better to know than guess

I have exactly the same on my MY95 WRX, but it only ever happens at very high speeds (120mph +) with my foot flat to the floor. I've been told it's the lambda sensor on it's way out and no real cause for concern

I get the same appear but when I first turn the key in the ignition. It goes out as soon as you turn the engine over. I've tried leaving it for a couple of minutes before starting to see if it goes out, but it doesn't. Is this cause for concern?

It's a light on the dash that says "check engine". When it comes on mine I've often opened the bonnet and the engine hasn't fallen out so I assume nothing is wrong

I think it picks up error codes from the ECU so the light can come on for a number of reasons.

If you know someone who can read the codes (cheaply!), get it done. If it's the lambda sensor the engine will run fine but you could be wasting huggins of fuel.
