Unhappy

When driving my 93 Subaru Legacy Turbo last week the "check engine" light came on, I stopped the car to see if there was anything obvious but to no avail. I then continued driving and noticed that when it came onto boost it started to hold back and misfire a bit and eventually the "check engine" light went out and the engine cut out and I stopped at the roadside. The only way it would start was if you gave it full throttle it would start and run at only 600-700 rpm no matter how much throttle you gave it. I was rescued by the RAC and taken home. :-(

The car has sat for a week now but it will start and run for around 10 seconds before it just cuts out. You can do this time and time again and it just keeps cutting out. The "check engine" light is on all the time. :-(

Any clues as to what might be wrong or any pointers ???

Cheers !

crank or cam sensors probably...

Have you connected the black "read memory" connectors up under the steering column? Some instructions for easy diagnosis here...

Where about are these wires on the Legacy ?

I have looked on the diagram you have given me on the link above but I cant make much sense of it. Other than that, the procedure looks quite straightforward once you get the wires connected.

Cheers !

I hope they are behind the dash under the steering wheel. It could be that they are still taped up out of sight - they just need unwrapping.

There should be a large yellow connector as well. This is for the diagnostic box to plug into.

I'm quite sure that they are present on the legacy as well as the Impreza!!

As dnd says..

They are usually taped back with blue colours tape to the loom sort of in line with the clutch pedal IIRC.

Take the platic cover off under the steering wheel.
The black ones are over near the stereo and the green are around the huge masses of wiring on the right side.

My legacy's cel cam on and it died, this happened a few time but only when i first started it. Turned out to be an earth problem.

That is the sensor on the air filter.. the bit with the wires going into..

Might have a picture here somewhere...
Here we are... it is on the far left of my dirt engine bay with the wires coming out

It could be running lean due to this which is not good..

The dealer will try no doubt and sell you the whole housding but you only need the sensor part which assuming it is the same as impreza I think about about £70.

Have a look here I think Graham Goode will do a new one or grade A Subaru a secondhand one.
