Ask your local dealer and see what they use but if im right Castrol 10-40 is normally stocked and used by most Subaru dealers.

I work for Castrol as tanker driver. Every Scooby dealers uses Magnatec 10/40. From cross country cars in Whitney to the guys at Southam, Castrol supply all and i guarantee its 10/40 magnatecIif you also think about it sensibly Magnatec coates all parts with a film so as not to leave shells dry on initial start up after oil change, ie thats why i fill oil filter up before i put it on car and i pull fuel pump fuse and wind it over on key to get oil around big ends and some pressure up then insert fuse again , then start Engine. Remember some off you guys, the damage is done to then engine when

1, Oil has been changed and filter not filled,

2, Big ends need oil to like wives need credit cards .lol

3, Majorety off damage is done to engine when its either started up and caned before its got up to its normal operating temperature .So think on the boy racers. Look after your engine and respect it and it will look after you.

magnatec??

I'm not an expert, but from what I have heard and read on here, it is one of the worst oils you could ever use.

Most of the experts and tuners on and off this board will recommend Motul 15/50 Fully synthetic.

Also, for the other bits you might be changing, I can recommend:
NGK PFR 7B spark plugs
Use Subaru parts for the fuel filter, oil filter.
Standard STi air filter. (Best to be safe with the MAF and unless your pushing BIG power, the std STI filter can throughput more than enough air, so no gains are to be had from upgrading)

Do a search, this has been covered millions of times.

The concencus agree that either:

Castrol RS10/60
or
Motul Motorsport 300v 15/50

are the best oils available.

I think you'll find the dealers themselves choose the oils etc...(prolly cheapest supplier for minimum rec. spec?)
Some of them at least, their mark up on oils must be huge... buy semi syn bulk and sell it for more than a decent FS retail from elsewhere!
And if you look into it isn't the 'magnetic' bit of magnatec refering to the properties of the synthetic ester part of the oil?
Which is also mentioned other ester based/containing oils by other manufacturers but may be refered to slightly differently

Ok, I wont get started on Magnatec but unless you know what you're on about, don't discount it as being crap.

If you drive a standard car and use it on the road, Magnatec is fine in my opinion. I have mentioned it before, but I have access to the technical people at Castrol and some of the non-biased testers.

Subaru do not specify a synthetic oil for impreza turbos.

If you are modding the car or do track days, then yes, it would be sensible to use a fully synthetic oil.

The Subaru is no different to any other car on the road, there's nothing special about it really, and its not a bloody F1 car

Dont believe the ****e that is spouted on here.
