MAF's Got Me Miffed ....
#1
I'm trying hopelessly to work out whether or not the MAF sensor on my MY96 has gone ... no matter how much I try the old four wire trick, I can't get the ECU to reset and clear out old error codes (error 23).
All symptoms seem to suggest MAF failure, inconsistent idling, loss of performance, better MPG due to car running lean. I've even tried taking the MAF housing off and giving it a blast with some brake cleaner but this made no difference.
Spoke to my local Scoob garage who reckon it is definitely the MAF sensor and tell me that I cannot buy the sonsor separately on my particular model, the complete unit is £180+VAT but I have also been offered the same part from a breaker for £60+VAT (guaranteed) but is it wise to buy one of these second hand ???
Any feedback/ideas/jokes will be gratefully received!

If the 2nd hand is guaranteed then get that, if it doesnt work take it back.
Also have you tried searching on ScoobyNet mate, I'm pretty sure there's a part number for the MAF posted on here somewhere.
Good Luck

Interesting that its guranteed.........2nd hand is as they say second hand.
You may be lucky and get one that was only recently replced though you might get one that has done 6 years of service
Pay your money & takes your choice.......though the consequences could be well over £180 quid..........

The MAF's on the early cars are pretty robust, so you should be fine with the one from the breakers.
If it doesn't work send it back and get another.
As I said they don't go wrong very often so the breakers probably have stacks of them

Again, the lambda sensor won't read to the ECU as 'broken' necessarily; the ECU won't notice an incorrect output.
And remember that lambda sensors have a shelf/mileage life - depends on the particular sensor, but I wouldn't trust one over 3 years old myself
