Since you had the tracking done . Have you had a knocks or kerbed it at all ? ... that can send it out aswell.

Also, are the wheels balanced ?

edit , 3000 miles !!!!.... hmmm ... you should be getting a lot more miles.

Help! Just returned from the 60,000 mile service at Scoobysport (v.good service btw! ) to be told the tyres are wearing very badly on the inside rims at the front - due to the tracking.

The tracking was done 7,500 miles ago at a well respected Scooby specialist, costing a considerable amount of money. The car handles fantastically, but this is the result:





The metal can be seen on the inside rim and there is about 2 inches of no tread at all, despite the rest of the tyres being 4mm. Both front tyres are wearing exactly the same, proving this isn't because we've knocked the tracking out and are checked at least every fortnight (usually weekly) maintaining a pressure of between 32psi and 34 psi as recommended by affore mentioned Scooby specialist.

The car is only used for the daily commute, and altough these are country lanes the car's never been on a track or airfield day and you wouldn't consider it to be "hard driving". We've run SO2's and then SO3's owning the car for 30,000 miles and never seen this before - the tyres were only put on 3,000 miles before the tracking was done...and now they need replacing!

What I would like to know is - is this "to be expected", i.e. am I going to be laughed at if I complain? There was no warning of this result before the tracking was done.

I had this happen to me! went to powerstation and had the steering geometry set up ( after coilovers and anti-lift kit was fitted ) and now no problems.I don't think that the tyres wearing out that quickly is acceptable, although changes to standard settings will cause quicker than "normal" wear.

I expected quicker than normal, but not total destruction of the inside rims I'll probably give Powerstation a ring this morning and see what they can do - Chris wanted the springs and anti-lift whislt we were at it, but I think a 60,000 mile service, tints, 2 new tyres and geometry is enough for one week

Brett - not knocked it at all - I did think that initally, but Scoobysport pointed out that it was exactly the same on both the front tyres, therefore not the "normal" hitting the kerb thingy. Also, although the wheels are looking pretty covered in brake dust there's no marks or dings on them...so I can't of hit anything!

As for the balancing - it was checked by the guys when they did the tracking...

The tyres were actually new 3,000 miles before hte tracking was done, so it's 3,000 + 7,500, so not as bad as all that, still pretty upset considering the last one's were more like 20,000 miles!

thats a bit crap, Im not going to mention who did the work, but if thats the result I dont think Ill be taking a trip up there - I have to say Im surprised this has happend, they have a good rep.

I've heard that having the "Prodrive" settings done can lead to the inside of the tyres wearing out first. Maybe you car was set to these setting when it was done?

 

Thanks for not mentioning them Andy - I'm going to write them a little letter after I've been to Powerstation and heard what they have to say about it...just wanted to get a few opinions on here first - bit of reassurance really!

Sti - nope, not the Prodrive ones, funnily enough, we had the Prodrive seetings on the car since we owned it (i.e. for the 22,500 miles before the other settings were done) and we never had the problem then! <sigh> oh well!

 

glad scoobysport sorted you out, Im now not going they called to say they wouldnt have all the parts in(glad they called but dissapointed that I wont be getting it done) however Hayward and Scott are coming to the rescue on the same day, though no up pipe(apparently much bigger job) but maybe get that done at SS later on in the month or something.

 

I had same problem on my Type R.

Took it to Elite to have the prodrive settings done (last November). Then about two weeks ago (about 5000 miles since settings were done) I noticed the inside of my front tyres were bald!

So I took it back and they told me it was because of the toe angles that were set, gives better handling, which it did, but will wear the tyres! So they have now set it back to standard so I can now get two new tyres.

I must admit it did handle better with the old setup but I aint going to keep getting new front tyres every 5 months so standard settings will do for me!

The wear on the inside tread is usually due to the bump steer on the Scoob. This will happen even if the toe in is correct.

My car used to do exactly the same, I took it to Powerstation at Cheltenham and had the bump steer mod and full suspension set up. The car is hugely better round corners, wet or dry and the tyres now wear absolutely evenly.

I have the prodrive settings on mine and they are eating the inside of the tyre a bit more than the rest.It is comon when they are set up like this.
