i replaced the belt but the marking which where on cams before i owned it looked like there not matching up, so i did TDC made new marks fitted belt etc, but now the engine rocks the full car and shakes from side to side but it sounds ok so i went for a small drive all ok until it ticks over at 900rpm then the shakes start again ?? so i drove for 19 miles and when i got home car had used quater of a tank of fuel

what have i done wrong and is it serious???

all too new for me i shouldnt have touched it

thanks

You should maybe re -check the timing marks as it could maybe be one of the camshafts a tooth or two out ,also check all the sensors are all connected properly.

If it was running ok before you changed the belt --- then the cam timing may be out,it has to be EXACT-one tooth out and it will run crap,if its badly out THE VALVES MAY HIT THE PISTON-(not recommended) check the timing marks on all 4 cam sprockets

Best thing to do after fitting the belt is to rotate the engine a full rotation using the crank pulley bolt to make sure that they are still lined up after rotation..
If the car has used excess fuel and rocks violently i would say that two of the pulleys may be a tooth out..

Cool

I had exactly the same problem with mine after a cam belt service at a main dealer. They fitted the belt correctly, according to them.

When they re-checked the timing it was a tooth out, so they replaced the belt and diagnosed a shagged cam belt tensioner. Apparently they are crap on Scoobies and should really be replaced evertime a belt is done They are around £300

Hope this helps Phill

the tensioners are crap but only until replaced with the modded type and then they are no problem.

damo has the belt got timing lines printed on it cos if so make sure that any writing on the belt can be read like normal because the timing lines are not the same for each bank of pullys i think the left hand side lines line up with a gap between the teeth and the right hand side line up with a tooth if you know what i mean! so if it goes on the wrong way round it will never be right .

e-mail me if you want some help

Its the phase 2 engines tensioners that are crap. Early cars are usually fine.

My timing belt got changed last year on my 95 WRX and the tensioner was sh@gged. It cost around £125 to replace.

DAMO

Had this problem too. Timing was tooth out. Ran the same as yours.
Ended up sending it to Greere Sport at Beith, near Glasgow.
Sorted it in no time and advised a new tensioner.
Call them and see what they say. Great guys for advice.

Their number is 01505 506 000

Ask for Bill or Colin

Good luck

Jamie
