After a lengthy and costly rebuild, is ther a specific oil type i should use to run the car in or should i whack in some full synth motul 15/50 straight away? I've heard new and old engine's oil requirements differ. Can anuone help.

Also who stocks motul in the uk?

Don't use fully synth, use a mineral based oil. IIRC Motul have an oil designed for running-in.

Scooby Mania & Demon Tweaks stock Motul.

What was the cause of failure?

Thanks. Don't really know but engine seized solid after a trash. Strip down revealed, one cylinder with no valve heads, valves heads had dropped off in to the bore and disintergrated, leaving the stems. Shrapnel found welded in all bores, also hole in piston, all valves bent.

Put this down to the fact i am jinxed with scoobys. This is subaru number 3!

Pictures coming soon.

Done the rebuild yourself? If not, I suppose the garage that did it would have a clue on what oil to use as they (or you) would have to do some work before and after start-up as well as after about 500 miles, like
re-torque the cylinder head, adjust the valves, change the oil and filter and to check the progress of the run-in.

Anyhow, good luck with the new engine.

Sorry to hear about the failure. Would you mind posting up any other details ie mods, fuel used, exact driving circumstances when the failure happened?

Jap Sti, ran for around 200 miles, always optimax, no mods bar itg panel, standard boost, standard exhaust. Although never used octance booster. Happened around 7500rpm, rev limiter hadn't cut in yet. As i changed up to 4th, revs dropped, engine shut down , power steering off, engine dead. No noise, no smoke.

Engine done by Grasshopper Pro Sport. Brand new sti7 subaru short block, full new gaskets, 2 x new cylinder heads, all new valves, all new tappets and shims, new head bolts, new belts and tensioners, hks plugs, all parts & piping blasted and chemically cleaned. No expense has been spared this time. Engine will be full warrantied.

Agree with hypoluxa - go for mineral and then semi synthetic before going for fully synthetic.

Yes, spoke to a subaru mechanic when i bought the new short block, who said there was a problem with sti7 engines from the factory, and i.m have a mountain of blown sti7 engine all done under warranty. On the new short block i bought there is supposedly a revision made to the pistons. Can anyone shed any light on what the exact revision were.

Jap STi7,

Am I reading your post right? You ran the car for 200 miles and took it up to 7,500 revs? Subaru's are normally have a 1,000 mile running in period during which time it has a 'thin' running in oil.

If you have been taking it above 4,000 revs then maybe this is what has caused the engine damage as it had not had the oil changed?

Damian.
