I've used some Wynnes hydralic valve lifter additive from Halfords, has improved it a bit. Will put some more in on the next oil change

I put mobil 1 15/50 in around 4k ago and towards the last 1k of it the engine seemed noisey on start up and when hot at idle. Did an oil change to Castrol RS 10/60 and it sounds way better. Theres no promises but an oil change is always a good thing.

Question

Funny you should say that because mine only started doing it after I changed to Mobil 1 motorsport 15/50 as well. Will have to try the castrol RS and see if that makes any difference

Thumbs down

My 96uk sounds 'as rough as old boots'with mobil 1 15/50.
(just done 600 mile round trip on fresh oil and filter)
I usually use silkolene pro s 10/50,but,can't get it anywhere locally.
...Last weekend i filled it with mobil 0/40,it sounded fine, but apparently this is not the right oil for older scoobs,so i took the advice of other 'netters'and of the Mobil Technical help line and went to the 15/50
...think i'll try the casrol rs tomorrow...£10.99 per litre tho

I got mine from Unipart for £20.99 for 4L and £9.99 for the extra 1L. My unipart shop is the parts department of Ford if that helps. Its still a little noisey but not as bad. The injectors are pretty loud. They seem to be in quite and acessable place in the engine bay so I might get them out and get them cleaned at LSUK.

Anyone any pointers on the removal of injectors.

Dont use 0/40, it isnt a good choice for a lot of engines, nevermind subarus of any age.

Can I add that my MY96 Sport started tapping, but only after a few minutes running, it would go sometimes if I stopped and restarted the engine, or would go away after about a mile or so. Would also go quiet after oil/filter changes, but no for long.

I followed a thread once to a Legacy BBS which commented on experiences of Wynnes hydralic valve lifter additive, so I got some from Halfords and added it at next oil/filter change, that was about 1000 miles ago. Only once have I heared any tapping since. Well pleased. My Scoob has now done 125,000 miles so I used Halfords Semi-synthetic for a change, with the additive.

Will use the Wynnes stuff each time now, well worth it.

I started using it at my last oil change. Have just bought some more for my next change. It did improve it but not get rid of it. I just posted up the comment as I've seen many people asking the same question recently

The tappets in my sport are pretty noisey all because some muppet in the garage put a 0W40 synthetic in it last time it was serviced. Luckily the radio is loud enought to drown out the noise. J

well the suggested solution for crappy vauxhalls is that u let the engine idle for about half hour, but they obviously dont know that vauxhalls over heat if u let them idle for that long lol

but it all works along the same lines i guess

Exclamation

Just had a look through the workshop manual for the early cars I have on disc and it states

"Hydraulic valve lash adjusters may make clicking noise once the engine starts. It is normal if clicking noise ceases after a few minutes.
If clicking noise continues after a few minutes, check engine oil level and add oil if necessary. Warm up engine for five minutes, then operate it at approx 3,000rpm for twenty minutes. If noise still exsists, conduct diagnostics procedures in accordance with the following table"

The table then states
"Type of sound = regular clicking sound"
"Condition = sound increases as engine speed increases"
"Possible cause = Valve mechanism is defective - *Broken lash adjuster, *worn valve rocker, *worn camshaft, *broken valve spring or *worn valve lifter hole"

I will try mine on different oil and see what diference it makes as a lot of people with this problem seem to be running on Mobil 15/50 and I wonder if this is a little to thick at start up.
